Avis Howell-Gathers

Howell-Gathers plays a vital role as an Academic Mentor, providing valuable academic tutoring assistance to student-athletes. In her position, she is responsible for assessing, recording, and reporting on students' development, progress, goal attainment, and behavior.

With a focus on student success, Howell-Gathers actively encourages and monitors the progress of students, ensuring they are on track and working towards their academic goals. She maintains open lines of communication to relay necessary information regarding students' progress and needs, keeping all well informed.  By offering academic support and guidance, Howell-Gathers helps student-athletes navigate their educational journey while balancing the demands of athletics. Her role as an Academic Mentor contributes to the overall academic development and success of student-athletes, fostering a supportive and conducive learning environment.

Background

Howell-Gathers is a retired higher education administrator who dedicated most of her career to Denmark Technical College. Throughout her tenure, she held various roles, including English Instructor, Director of the college's first Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), Executive Dean of Student Services and Academic Support, and Vice President of Student Affairs.  Her exemplary work and dedication earned her the honor of being selected by her colleagues as Faculty of the Year, Staff of the Year, and Administrator of the Year. These accolades reflect her commitment to excellence and the positive impact she made within the institution.  As a proud graduate of South Carolina State University, Howell-Gathers remains connected to her alma mater. She is an esteemed member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Additionally, she is actively involved in the STATE Club, an organization dedicated to supporting and promoting SC State University.
