Learie Luke

The Director of the Office of International and National Student Exchange Programs oversees the global engagement initiatives at South Carolina State University to help fulfill the mission of the institution to prepare students to live productively in a dynamic global society.

This includes efforts to bring the world to students by showcasing countries and cultures on campus, and taking students to other countries via cultural immersion programs and study abroad.  The Director also leads efforts to engage students and faculty in applying for Fulbright awards, and supervises the International Education Coordinator who is responsible for study abroad, the National Student Exchange program, and helping students apply for various study away scholarships.

  • BA in Theology from Caribbean Union College (now University of the Southern Caribbean, 1989

Background

Dr. Luke started working at SC State in 2001 as a history faculty member in the Department of Political Science and History (now the Department of Social Sciences).  He has served as a department Cchairperson, associate vice president of academic affairs, associate provost, and provost and vice president of academic affairs. 

Research Interests

  • History of Tobago, particularly the History of the Tobago House of Assembly.
  • The impact of cultural immersion and study abroad on students at HBCUs

Publications

He has written a book, "Identity and Secession in the Caribbean: Tobago versus Trinidad, 1889-1980," published book chapters, articles, and encyclopedia entries.
