The Board of Visitors


Mr. AllenMr. Jameel Allen, is a 2001 SC State graduate and a graduate of Arizona State University. He serves as Sales & Marketing Manager on the Corporate Sales Board at Fluor Corporation, one of the world’s leading and largest engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance services companies.  Prior to this role, Allen served as the Country Deputy Manager for Project Development in Afghanistan, working directly with the US Department of Army Account.  Since joining Fluor in 2001, Allen has held numerous positions in sales and operations, globally.  He resides in Greer, SC.



Dr. BellDr. Benetta Gadegbeku Bell, Chair of the Board of Visitors, is a 1979 SC State graduate. She attended Howard University, Washington, DC, and is a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.  She has served as an Assistant Professor at the Medical University and as an adjunct staffer at the Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, SC.  She presently serves as a volunteer for the Richland County Free Children’s Clinic and the Lexington, SC Free Adult Dental Clinic.  Dr. Bell is in private practice in Columbia, SC, where she resides with her family.



Mr. Guss Bodison earned a B.A. Degree at SC State in 1991 and a Master of Business Administration (HR) from Webster University, St. Louis, MO in 1998. He serves as Operations Manager for Best Buy Distribution in Suwanee, GA. An experienced Senior Supply Chain Specialist, Mr. Bodison has achieved cost reductions, improved efficiencies and managed budgets for the likes of BMW, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, IBM and Blue Bird Corporation.  He resides in Jonesboro, GA.



Mr. Corey O. Bowdre, a 1993 graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, received a Master of Education in Counselor Education from SC State University in 1995. He is, also, a US Army Reservist and US War Veteran. Mr. Bowdre serves as Senior Manager of Premium Sales & New Business Development with the Boston Red Sox and has many years of experience in sports marketing, promotions and sales.  Mr. Bowdre resides in Weymouth, MA.



Mr. BrownMr.  Redick Brown earned a B.S. Degree in Biology from SC State in 1999 and an MBA (Marketing/Consulting) from the University of Georgia’s Terry College in 2006. A successful stint as Area Sales Manager for DaimlerChrysler in Alabama and Florida led to an entrepreneurial opportunity with Arrigo FIAT in West Palm, FL.  Mr. Brown holds the position of Studio Director for the enterprise. He is, presently, enrolled in Chrysler LLC’s Minority Dealer Program and is a candidate for the Automotive News Top 40 under 40.  Mr. Redick resides in Wellington, FL.



Mr. CarrowayMr. Gary Carroway, Vice Chair of the Board of Visitors, is a 1985 SC State graduate.  He is the Director of Sales for the South Atlantic District of the United Parcel Service (UPS).  His responsibilities include directing the sales division for the Carolina Zone (the entire state of North Carolina and a major part of South Carolina).  Mr. Carroway has been employed with UPS since 1987 serving in several capacities. He is very involved in his community and has served on a number of advisory boards.  Mr. Carroway resides in Columbia, SC.



Lt. Col. ConyersLt. Col. Alexander Conyers is a 1989 graduate of South Carolina State University. He received Master Degrees from Troy State University (1999) and from the University of South Carolina (2002).  He has an extensive military background, with 22+ years leading, training, supervising troops and executing important missions in actions that include policy development, training and the security of military personnel.  Conyers is an active duty Lieutenant Colonel, presently stationed in Fort Knox, KY, where he is responsible for over 4,000 military officers in the United States Army. Lt Col. Conyers resides in Fort Knox, KY.



Ms. Lauren Dawkins is a native of Orangeburg, a 1987 graduate of South Carolina State University and the University of Maryland.  Her resume includes corporate experiences with financial investments in banking & credit industries as well as having been a Sole Proprietorship in her own businesses for over 15+ years. Ms. Dawkins has been with Century 21 The Moore Group as a full-time Realtor in their Commercial & Residential Investments side for over a decade and holds several sales records and honors.  Ms. Dawkins lives in Orangeburg, SC.



Mr. DukesMr. Cedric D. Dukes is a 1992 SC State graduate and a graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. He serves as a Vehicle Engineering Manager for General Motors Corporation. His past job responsibilities include positions in purchasing, quality and material cost reduction. Cedric is the author of two books, Hostile Takeover – Manifesting God’s Plan and Purpose for Your Finances and The Power of Time- Living a Life of No Regrets. He resides in Michigan with his family.



SC State University First Lady, Dr. Monedia Elzey, is a native of Woodstock, VA. Dr. Elzey received her Ph.D. in Couple and Family Therapy from Drexel University, a Master of Social Work from Howard University, and a Bachelor of Social Work from Radford University. For more than 17 years, she has been a psychotherapist in private practice and has worked with behavioral health organizations in various positions in management and direct service. As the wife of the University's 11th President, Thomas J. Elzey, she actively supports the president's mission by her involvement in the planning and coordination of university and community initiatives, student mentoring and the enhancement of campus life. Dr. Elzey and her husband are the proud parents of two, adult daughters



Mr. Heyward Golden, received a Bachelor of Science from SC State University in 1983 and a Master of Education from Georgia Southern University in 2009.  In 1990, Mr. Golden joined AMIkids, Tampa, FL and has risen to his present post of Vice President of Operations for the company: responsible for programming, leadership development, strategic planning, fundraising and legislative advocacy. Mr. Golden resides in Land O Lakes, FL.



Rev. JacksonRev. Charles B. Jackson, Jr, is a resident and native of Columbia, SC and a 2000 graduate of SC State University. Rev. Jackson continued his education at The Morehouse School of Religion in Atlanta, GA, earning a Master of Divinity in 2003. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Divinity from Beeson Divinity School of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Rev. Jackson was officially ordained into ministry in 2002 and is, presently, the happy and humble Pastor of the New Laurel Street Baptist Church in Columbia, SC.



Col. LeaksColonel (Ret.) Roger Leaks, Jr. is a 1963 SC State graduate.  Colonel Leaks is a former management level employee of IBM and Exxon. Additionally, Colonel Leaks has served as a Board member on the SC State Election Commission and the SC Department of Health and Environment Control Board (DHEC). Currently, Colonel Leaks is the President and Owner of Bochinelli Enterprises, a Photography, T-Shirt and Fundraising company located in Columbia, SC, where he resides.



Dr. McClainDr. Harold McClain, is a 1970 graduate of SC State College and earned a Master of Education Administration from the University of SC in 1977 and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova University, Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 1998.  He is a former Medical Officer with the US Army Reserves and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the FREE and Accepted Order of Masons. Committed to education, Dr. McClain holds certifications as a Strategic Planner, Teacher, Secondary School Administrator and District Superintendent. He is a member of several professional organizations and his expertise includes research, curriculum and human resource development, grant application, program evaluation and needs assessment and motivational speaking. Dr. McClain resides in Santee, SC.



Ms. PerkinsMs. Beverly Joan Perkins is a 1969 graduate of South Carolina State University and graduate of Morgan State University (1999) with a Masters in Education.  She served as an Administrator for the Frederick Douglas High School in Baltimore, MD for many years.  Her professional resume includes accolades in the coordination, evaluation and implementation of several educational programs for several Maryland Schools in her years in education. Ms. Perkins resides in St. Stephen, SC.



Mr. PhillipsMr. Michael G. Phillips, CIA is a 1999 graduate of South Carolina State University.  He has over nine years of experience in internal auditing as a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) with several corporate companies in the NC area such as BB&T, Wells Fargo, and Ernest & Young, LLP.  His professional experience includes planning and executing operational business risk audits for several Fortune 500 companies. Mr. Phillips resides in Rolesville, NC.



Mrs. PinkstonMrs. Jean Brown Pinkston is a 1980 SC State graduate.  She is Director of On-air Fundraising and Programming for SC ETV and Radio, South Carolina’s statewide Public Broadcasting affiliate.  Mrs. Pinkston has over 24 years of experience in the production of national and local television and radio programs and has implemented the agency’s fundraising efforts for over a decade.  She resides in Columbia, SC.



Ms. PriceMs. Stephanie Price is a 2000 graduate of SC State and holds a Masters in Human Resource Management from Webster University (2009). As EEO Officer with the SC Human Affairs Commission, Ms. Price has extensive experience in Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) laws and compliance in reference to Title VII: producing the annual report to the SC Legislature on the status of EEO in State Government. As experienced investigator and trainer, she assists state agencies and private companies in adhering to state and federal employment regulations and continually researches new mandates and statutes affecting employment practices.  Ms. Price resides in Columbia, SC.



Mr. Vernon L. PryorMr. Vernon L. Pryor, a 1988 graduate of SC State with a degree in Business Administration, is a Contract Specialist with the US Department of Defense ~ US Navy. He is responsible for providing customers with value-added business acquisition solutions: to include the procurement of equipment, services and supplies; prescribing rules and regulations/monitoring deliverables on behalf of the Secretary of Defense and soliciting, negotiating and awarding complex procurement contracts. Mr. Pryor has secured several federal contract awards and is, also, a Planning Commissioner for the City of North Charleston, SC. He resides in Summerville, SC.



Mr. RobertsMr. Demar Lamont Roberts received a BA degree from SC State in 2009 and is a candidate for an Executive Masters in Business Administration from the University of Memphis (May 2013). As Vice President of Operations for First Choice Sales & Marketing Group, Inc, he is responsible for strategic planning, marketing and corporate and category development for agency corporate accounts including Wal-Mart, Family Dollar, Walgreens, CVS and others. With a budget of $93 million dollars, Mr. Roberts sets policy for his company’s growth and profitability, oversees daily operations and is the Chief Human Resources Officer. He maintains dual residency in Memphis, TN and Bentonville, AR.



Mr. SimmonsMr. Rudolph Simmons is a 1978 graduate of SC State and a graduate of Duke University Fuqua School of Business.  He has 20 plus years of management and professional experience in the areas of procurement, project management and quality control.  He is a Section Manager at BMW Manufacturing Company in Spartanburg, SC.  He resides in Greer, SC.



Col. SingletonColonel (Ret.) Richard Singleton, a 1958 SC State graduate, was honorably retired from the United States Army in 1988 after 30 years of service. He earned a Master Degree in Public Administration from the University of Missouri and is a graduate of the US Army Command and General Staff College and the National War College. Col. Singleton was a founding partner of Youth Services International and a founding Board Member of Providence Service Corporation in Phoenix, AZ.  He resides in Orangeburg, SC.



Mr. SmithMr. Michael Todd Smith is a 1997 graduate of South Carolina State University and a 2001 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a Masters in Health Administration. He currently serves as the Director of Gibson Cancer Center; an outpatient cancer treatment facility affiliated with Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, NC.  Michael has over 11 years of experience in healthcare administration and a list of accomplishments nearly as long.  Mr. Smith resides in Fayetteville, NC.



Ms. SpeedMs. Kendra Speed, Secretary of the Board of Visitors, is a 2001 SC State graduate and a graduate of Purdue University. She is the Director of Development at Data Systems & Technology, Inc., an Information Technology firm that provides professional services to the Federal government.  Prior to this role, Speed spent five years at Procter & Gamble as a Consumer Market Knowledge Manager, where her roles included leadership of global research to build the 3-5 year pipeline for the $2 Billion global brand, Olay. She resides in Charlotte, NC.



Dr. Walter L. Walters is a 1986 graduate of SC State. He received his Doctorate of Medicine from Ross University School of Medicine in North Brunswick, NJ in 1995 and, subsequently, completed an internship, residency and research fellowship with the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Dr. Walters serves as Staff Anesthesiologist with Tulare Regional Medical Center in Tulare, CA and Visalia Anesthesia Medical Associates in Visalia, CA. He is a member of many professional organizations, with certifications and affiliations including: Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology, Pediatric Sedation outside the Operating Room, the ACLS and the BLS.  Dr. Walters resides in Visalia, CA.
