Students interested in becoming members of the Honors College should first apply for admission to SC State University www.scsu.edu/admissions. A completed application for SC State University serves as the application for Honors College membership; there is no separate application process.
The Criteria for Honors College membership are: 1)Rank in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class. 2)Have an ACT composite score of at least 24 or an SAT score of at least 1100 (Critical Reading and Math sections only). 3)National Merit Scholar 4)Offered Presidential/ General Scholarship
Students who have outstanding records and are close to the criteria also will receive a comprehensive individualized evaluation and may be invited. The Honors College may request additional information before extending an invitation to membership
The admission process for current SC State students, (referred to as Track B) is offered to students who have completed at least one semester of SC State University and have a 3.5 or higher. Admittance to the Honors College is by invitation only. The admission process begins early each spring semester and will finish by the end of that same spring semester. At the beginning of each spring semester, the Honors College will target the first year students in each college (based on cumulative GPA at the end of the fall semester) and examine each student’s record for evidence of academic excellence. In addition, the student will have to go through an interview process, as well as present two letters of recommendations and evidence of writing skills. Invitations will be sent to students’ SC State email accounts. The Honors College at SC State is designed as a four-year experience, and current students will only be reviewed for admission during their first year at SC State. Students who decline a membership invitation or who are not invited to membership as part of the annual review process will not be considered in future reviews. Furthermore, Track B Students must complete a minimum 18 hours of Honors curriculum to be eligible for Honors designation at time of graduation.
The SC State Honors College welcomes eligible transfer students into its ranks. If you were a member of an Honors Program/College at another institution at the time of your transfer to SC State, you are automatically eligible to become a member of the Honors College at South Carolina State University. If the transfer student was previously apart of the Honors College at another institution, they must provide an official letter from the Dean/Director (on letterhead) of that Honors College/Program and submit it to the Dean of Students of South Carolina State University’s Honors College. If you were attending a community college and were a member of Phi Theta Kappa, you are eligible to become a member the Honors College upon admission to State (please provide the appropriate documents). Transfer students may be admitted to the SC State Honors College through the second semester of their sophomore year
