Scholarships

All recipients of University funded scholarships, grants, abatements and waivers are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by May 1 each year and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or the designated program specific GPA for continued eligibility.


University provided scholarships, grants, abatements and waivers are awarded to assist students with their direct on campus costs and cannot be refunded to the recipient. University funds will be reduced or cancelled if there is a change in recipient’s award package or semester costs.


Army ROTC Scholarships

- the Army ROTC Scholarship Program offers financial assistance to outstanding young men and women who are interested in the Active Army, Army National Guard or Army Reserve. These scholarships pay full tuition and academic fees, and provide a flat rate of $1,200 per year for books and supplies. Army ROTC scholarship recipients have the costs of room and board covered by the university, and also receives a tax-exempt monthly stipend, up to $ 4,000 per school year. The four-year scholarship is available to high school seniors who plan to attend South Carolina State University. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, score at least 920 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or 19 on the ACT, possess leadership potential and good moral character, and are oriented toward the Army. Applicants must contact the Military Science Department for additional details. The four-year Award is valued at approximately $68,500.

The three-year scholarship is available to freshmen who have completed no more than one semester of full-time study. This award is valued at approximately $51,000.

The two-year scholarship is available to sophomores who have completed no more than three semesters of full-time study. This award is valued at approximately $34,200. The total values listed represent in-state costs. The benefits would be greater for students paying out-of-state tuition and fees. The two- and three year scholarships, as on campus awards, are available to students not enrolled in ROTC as well as those enrolled; non enrolled applicants must enroll in ROTC if selected for one of these awards. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic performance, character, leadership potential, and orientation toward the Army.

In addition to the scholarships referred to above, the students accepted for enrollment in the ROTC Advanced Course receive a $ 450 to $ 500 monthly stipend that totals approximately $7,600 during the junior and senior years. Acceptance into the Advanced Course is based upon academic performance, character, leadership potential, and orientation toward the Army.

Atlanta, Ga. Alumni Chapter Scholarship

- This Scholarship awarded to an incoming freshman for a one-time/one year disbursal - OR - eight (8) consecutive payments during Fall and Spring semesters. Click here for scholarship application (Application must be postmarked on or before June 1, 2012.)

Beaufort Alumni Chapter Scholarship

- is $500 awarded to the sophomore with the highest academic average from Beaufort County

Central Florida Alumni Chapter Scholarship

- is $500 administered by the Chapter according to guidelines of the Chapter.

Dick Horne Foundation Scholarships

- is awarded only to residents of Orangeburg, South Carolina and Calhoun Counties within South Carolina and are based on Financial Need, Character and Ability.

Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowships (for eligible seniors at SC State University)

- Each Fellowship is valued at up to $8,500 for one year. The applicant must be a citizen of the United States or well into the process of becoming a U.S. citizen; be a full-time undergraduate student enrolled at South Carolina State University majoring in a designated transportation related discipline, be within the final 40 credit hours of the bachelor's degree at the time the fellowship becomes effective; have an earned cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher; have plans for a career in a transportation related profession.

Edna W. Harrison Scholarship Award

- This scholarship is given to a Junior majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences Business/Child Development with a minimum GPA of 2.8. This student must also be an active member of a professional organization and demonstrate leadership skills.

Eliza T. Hampton Scholarship

- The Eliza T. Hampton Scholarship, sponsored by Xi Eta Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority, is awarded to an upper class student who demonstrates leadership and genuine commitment to the nursing profession. This scholarship award of $500 is given annually.

Family and Consumer Sciences Faculty/Alumni Scholarships

- These scholarship awards are presented to students majoring in the Family and Consumer Sciences areas listed below. These students should demonstrate academic excellence and maintain active membership in the AAFCS professional organization.
  • Family and Consumer Sciences Education
  • Nutrition and Food Management
  • Family and Consumer Sciences Business

Florida Gulf Coast Alumni Chapter Scholarship

- is $500 administered by the Chapter according to guidelines of the Chapter.

General University Scholarship

- This tuition only scholarship is awarded to incoming freshman for two semesters and is renewable for 6 semesters. This is a full tuition only scholarship.

To be considered for a General Scholarship an incoming freshman student must:

  • graduate high school with at least a 3.25 GPA on uniform grading scale;
  • achieve at least 1100(CR+M) on the SAT I test or 24 on the ACT test.

 

To be considered for scholarship renewal a General Scholarship, Scholar must:

  • maintain full-time student status;
  • achieve a 3.25 cumulative GPA at South Carolina State University;
  • make Satisfactory Degree Specific Academic Progress each semester
  • be in good standing with their major department; and
  • not violate any of the standing rules and/or regulations of the University. Violation will automatically disqualify the recipient from further support through the scholarship program.

 


This scholarship is awarded based on availability of funds.  The General Scholarship is restricted to South Carolina residents.



Greater Columbia Alumni Chapter

awards two academic scholarships in the amounts of $1000 each for incoming SCSU freshmen. Students should go to the Chapter website at www.capitalcitybulldogs.com and download the scholarship application. All applications must be postmarked no later than May 18th to be considered for the upcoming Fall semester. The Chapter also offers $1000 for need-based scholarships for textbooks and other resources. Because alumni and supporters can contribute funds year round for scholarships, students are encouraged to apply for need-based scholarships year round. For need-based scholarships students should go to the SCSU Office of Alumni Affairs and request these funds directly or email the Greater Columbia Chapter at scholarship@capitalcitybulldogs.com.

Greenville Alumni Chapter Scholarship

- is $500 administered by the Chapter according to guidelines of the Chapter.

Greenwood Alumni Chapter Scholarship

- is $500 administered by the Chapter according to guidelines of the Chapter.

Hope Scholarship

- This is a non-renewable partial scholarship designed to assist in covering tuition, room and board and is valued in the amount of $2,800 ($1,400 per semester). This scholarship is awarded to entering South Carolina freshmen only. To be considered for this scholarship the student must:
  • graduate high school with a 3.0 GPR on the uniform grading scale
  • must be a resident of South Carolina at the time of high school graduation

Kappa Omicron Nu National Honor Society Scholarship Award

This scholarship is available to students who are active members of Kappa Omicron Nu. The student must major or minor in a Family and Consumer Sciences area, rank in the upper 25% of the undergraduate class and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.00. In addition, this student must exhibit superior personal qualities and leadership potential. Graduate students in Family and Consumer Sciences must rank in the top 25% of their class and have a minimum GPA of 3.50.

Legacy Scholarship

To preserve the legacy of the more than 30,000 South Carolina State University alumni who have impacted our state and nation, President Cynthia Warrick has established the Legacy Scholarship. The Legacy Scholarship is available to assist with the cost of tuition and fees for the next generation of bulldog scholars. Students must meet the following requirements to be eligible.
  • Must be child or grandchild of an Alumni
  • Must have a minimum grade point average of 3.00
  • Can either be an In-State/Out of State Resident
  • New application required annually-no automatically renewable
  • Cannot receive a refund for this scholarship funds
  • Not need based
This scholarship is awarded based on availability of funds. The Legacy Scholarship is a one year only award.

LIFE Scholarship

- This is a partial scholarship designed to assist covering tuition, room and board and is valued in the amount of $5,000 ($2,500 per semester). This scholarship is awarded to entering South Carolina freshmen only. To be considered for this scholarship the students must have two out of the three qualifications:
  • graduate high school with a 3.0 GPR on the uniform grading scale
  • achieve at least 1100 (CR+M) on the SAT I test or 24 on the ACT test
  • rank in the upper 30% of high school graduating class
  • must be a resident of South Carolina at the time of high school graduation

This scholarship is awarded to incoming freshman for two semesters and is renewable for 6 semesters if the student:

  • maintains full-time student status;
  • achieve a 3.0 cumulative LIFE GPA at all eligible institutions;
  • is in good standing with their major department; and
  • does not violate any of the standing rules and/or regulations of the University. Violation will automatically disqualify the recipient from further support through the scholarship program.


Marian Baxter Paul Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a Family and Consumer Sciences Student who has a 3.5 or better GPA. In addition, this student must have potential for success, an outstanding character, and has a financial need.

M. Maceo Nance, Jr., School of Nursing Scholarship

- The Maceo Nance, Jr., Nursing Scholarship(s) are given annually to qualified students currently enrolled in the nursing program at South Carolina State University. The scholarships are awarded annually in the spring with the money available for the fall semester. The number and amount of the scholarships are determined within the Department of Nursing. Both RN and generic students are eligible for the awards. Students must meet specific criteria and submit an application to the Department of Nursing annually for consideration of the award.

National Achievement, National Hispanic and National Merit Scholarships

- This scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen who are as recognized as a National Achievement Scholar, National Hispanic Scholar or National Merit Scholar. This is a full tuition, room and board scholarship. Students who receive this scholarship will also be awarded a book loan for the cost of their books (All books must be returned to the Office of Admissions, Recruitment and Scholarships at the end of each semester) Scholars failing to return their books will be charged.


To be considered for these scholarships the student must:

  • graduate high school with at least a 3.50 GPA on the uniform grading scale;
  • be recognized as a National Achievement Scholar, National Hispanic Scholar or National Merit Scholar.

 

To be considered for scholarship renewal a National Achievement, National Hispanic and National Merit Scholarships, Scholar must:

  • maintain full-time student status
  • achieve a 3.50 cumulative GPA at South Carolina State University
  • make Satisfactory Degree Specific Academic Progress each semester
  • be in good standing with their major department; and
  • not violate any of the standing rules and/or regulations of the University. Violation will automatically disqualify the recipient from further support through the scholarship program.

New York Alumni Chapter Scholarship

- is $500 administered by the Chapter according to guidelines of the Chapter.

NFL/NFL Players Association Scholarship

- Each NFL/NFLPA Fellow receives a scholarship in an amount up to $5,000. Students are selected in the spring semester of the sophomore year for junior year scholarships. Recipients must have a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and an unmet financial need. Award recipients are selected by a committee consisting of NFL Players and League representatives.

Oliver C. Dawson Scholarship

- The $1,000 awarded or presented to a full-time student at South Carolina State University in the junior class with a 3.00 GPA. The student must exhibit serious mindedness toward the discipline of physical education and must possess the qualities of maturity, initiative, stability, enthusiasm, and high morals.

Orangeburg Alumni Chapter Scholarship

- is $500 administered by the Chapter according to guidelines of the Chapter.

Presidential Scholarships

- Dr. M. M. Nance, Jr. instituted this scholarship during the 1978-79 academic years. The Presidential Scholars are students at the University, who by virtue of meeting prescribed criteria are the recipients of a full scholarship (tuition, room & board) during eight semesters. These scholarships represent the concern of the President, (1) to identify students who demonstrate academic excellence, (2) to articulate a concern for a methodology to encourage those who demonstrate excellence, (3) to provide symbolic recognition via academic scholarships to recipients and (4) to establish a technique whereby the University may identify a cadre of intellectual scholars. The Presidential scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen for two semesters and is renewable for 6 semesters if the student meets the renewal eligibility criteria. This is a full tuition, room and board scholarship. Students who receive this scholarship will also be awarded a book loan for the cost of their books (All books must be returned to the Office of Admissions, Recruitment and Scholarships at the end of each semester) Scholars failing to return their books will be charged.


To be considered for this scholarship an incoming freshman student must:

  • graduate high school with at least a 3.50 GPA on the uniform grading scale
  • achieve at least 1200(CR+M) on the SAT I test or 27 on the ACT test

 

To be considered for scholarship renewal a Presidential Scholarship, scholar must:

  • maintain full-time student status;
  • achieve a 3.50 cumulative GPA at South Carolina State University;
  • make Satisfactory Degree Specific Academic Progress each semester
  • be in good standing with their major department; and
  • not violate any of the standing rules and/or regulations of the University. Violation will automatically disqualify the recipient from further support through the scholarship program.

 

This scholarship is awarded based on availability of funds.  Priority consideration for Presidential Scholarship is given to South Carolina Residents. An interview is required for this scholarship.

Sara A. Waymer Scholarship

- This scholarship is awarded to a Family and Consumer Sciences student who has a GPA of 3.00 or better, displays active membership
in a professional organization, and shows evidence of leadership ability.

South Carolina State Alumni Scholarship Fund (Nursing Students Only)

- The South Carolina State Alumni Scholarship Fund was created from South Carolina Alumni donations earmarked for nursing students only. It is used as a Nursing Student Emergency Fund. Priority consideration is give to nursing students enrolled in clinical nursing courses or accepted for progression into the upper division of the curriculum. The amount awarded is dependent upon the availability of funds. Students must complete an application and submit it to the Department of Nursing.

Spartanburg Alumni Chapter Scholarship

- is $500 awarded or administered by the Chapter according to guidelines of the Chapter.

SC State University Achievers Scholarship

- This tuition only scholarship is awarded to currently enrolled SC State University students who have achieved academically over the prior academic year. The awards are renewable for six, four or two years, for rising Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors respectively. This is a full tuition only scholarship.

To be considered for this scholarship the student must:

  • be enrolled the prior academic year as a freshman, sophomore or junior
  • earn a 3.50 GPA or higher

 


To be considered for scholarship renewal a SC State Achiever Scholarship, scholar must:

  • have earned their next academic rank (sophomore, junior or senior)
  • maintain full-time student status;
  • achieve a 3.50 cumulative GPA at South Carolina State University;
  • make Satisfactory Degree Specific Academic Progress each semester
  • be in good standing with their major department; and
  • not violate any of the standing rules and/or regulations of the University. Violation will automatically disqualify the recipient from further support through the scholarship program

The A.I. Mose Scholarship

- is $500 awarded each fall to a continuing student who is majoring in Elementary Education. The selection is based on a 2.80 cumulative GPA, active membership in the Arnett Club and has demonstrations of intellectual curiosity in the classroom, and faculty vote.

The Amelia S. Roberts Scholarship

– is a $500 scholarship awarded during the spring semester to a freshman student who made significant academic achievements during his/her initial semester at South Carolina State University. Selection is based on a 2.80 cumulative GPA, active membership in the Arnett Club, has demonstration of intellectual curiosity in and outside the classroom, has demonstration of a college reading level, and has faculty votes.

The A. Timothy McClintock Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a physical science or biology major with at least a 2.5 GPA.

The Burrell E. Workman, Jr., Memorial Scholarship

- is $500 awarded to senior pre-medical students matriculating at South Carolina State University. This scholarship was established in August 1973 by Mrs. George R. Barnes of Orangeburg, South Carolina as a memorial to her father, Burrell E. Workman. Jr., of Chattanooga. Tennessee. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of character, academic, and financial need.

The Class of 1953 Scholarships

- One or two scholarships given annually to full-time freshman, sophomore or junior students valued at $300-$500. Recipients must exhibit academic ability and demonstrate a high standard of self-discipline, initiative and stability. Students must also possess outstanding leadership qualities, good moral character, enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity.

The Class of 1957 Endowed Scholarship

– This scholarship is awarded to upperclassmen with a GPA of 2.7 or better with qualifying scores on the PRAXIS , one must be a Special Education major or any other teacher education major with unmet financial need.

The Gilbert Spears Scholraship

-a Five hundred dollars is awarded to the agribusiness major beyond the freshman year who best demonstrates academic excellence and outstanding character and leadership ability.

The Helen T. Bankhead Memorial Scholarship

– is a $500 scholarship that’s donated by Porter L. Bankhead for a student of high academic standing who has demonstrated outstanding qualities of leadership.

The Helen Wilkinson Sheffield Memorial Scholarship

- is $600 awarded to a sophomore young lady who has earned at least forty-five hours with grade point average of 3.00 or better. She should be industrious, a good citizen of character exemplifying finer womanhood. The award will be paid in two installments of $300 at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.

The Henderson-Davis Players' Performance Scholarship

- is a $500 scholarship donated by Mrs. Algernon S. Belcher. It is presented to a sophomore or junior dramatic art major at South Carolina State University who has demonstrated a serious intent to pursue a degree in either educational or professional theater. The student must have at least a 2.50 cumulative average and a 3.00 average in his or her major field. In addition, the student must also demonstrate an interest in the total theater program at South Carolina State University and openly support its functions and projects through active involvement.

The James R. Washington and Family Scholarships

- $500 each given equally to male and female majors in education with priority given to Health and/or Physical Education majors entering their professional clinical experiences, and providing evidence of financial need.

The Linda Lee Holmes Scott Scholarship

- This scholarship is awarded to students from Charleston, SC majoring in Social Work

The Lula Powell Durant Memorial Scholarship

- This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences/Nutrition and Food Management. The recipient must be a Junior or Senior with a GPA of 2.8 or better. In addition, the recipient must be an active member of South Carolina State University’s Family and Consumer Sciences pre-professional organization and must exhibit
leadership skills and involvement in community service activities.

The National Alumni Association Scholarship Award

- The South Carolina State University Alumni Association awards one scholarship of $1,000 annually to a talented student who will be entering in the fall as a freshman. The award may be renewed annually for a total of $4,000 if the student makes acceptable progress and is in good standing with the University.

The Richard D. Duck Memorial Golf Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a freshman who graduated with a high school GPA of at least a 2.5 and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Recipient must be a member of the golf team.

The Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Scholarship

- is $635. This award is donated by the Student Government Association for a student of outstanding academic attainment. The student must demonstrate exceptional promise and leadership potential. The recipient must be a resident of South Carolina.


The Washington, D.C., Alumni Chapter Memorial Scholarship

- is a $500 scholarship awarded annually over a four-year period to a student who maintains high academic standing and continues to demonstrate outstanding potential.

The Wilhelmina Funchess Scholarship Award

- A $500 scholarship award to financially assist a junior majoring Food and Nutrition. The student must have a minimum grade point average of 2.8 and be in good standing at the University. The recipient is selected by the University Fellowship and Scholarship Committee.


Transfer Student Scholarships

-The Transfer Student scholarship is a renewable award which covers tuition. It is awarded to a transfer student after completion of two years of college work (60 + Semester Hours) or the completion of their Associates degree. The Transfer scholarship is awarded to a transfer student for two semesters and is renewable for 2 semesters.  This is a full tuition only scholarship.


To be considered for this scholarship the student must:

  • meet all requirements for regular admission to the University
  • transfer with a 3.50 GPA or is a documented member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society.

To be considered for scholarship renewal a Transfer Scholarship, Scholar must:

  • maintain full-time student status
  • achieve a 3.50 cumulative GPA at South Carolina State University;
  • make Satisfactory Degree Specific Academic Progress each semester
  • be in good standing with their major department; and not violate any of the standing rules and/or regulations of the University. Violation will automatically disqualify the recipient from further support through the scholarship program.

This scholarship is awarded based on availability of funds.




USDA/1890 National Scholars Program

- The USDA/1890 National Scholars Program will provide full tuition, employment, employee benefits, fees, books, personal computer and software and room and board each year for four years for eligible students pursuing a Bachelors science degree at South Carolina State University in any field of study in agriculture, food, or natural resource sciences.

USDA Strengthening Grant Stipend Scholarships (School of Business)

- There are five scholarships of varying amounts available usually covering the cost of tuition. Applicants must have a SAT score of 1,000 or above and letters of recommendation from high school personnel.
