Textbooks and Learning Materials Program (TLMP)

Biology BookIt was just two years ago when South Carolina State University was award a $3 million dollar grant to implement a Textbooks and Learning Materials Program (TLMP) in Tanzania. The program is funded by the United State Agency for International Development (USAID).

The purpose of the program is to address the challenges related to the lack of textbooks and other learning materials in select Sub-Saharan African countries.

The TLMP is a partnership between USAID, six universities in the United States (Alabama A&M, Chicago State, Elizabeth City State, Mississippi Consortium for International Development, University of Texas at San Antonio, and South Carolina State University); and six African countries (Ethiopia, Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia) to develop, produce and distribute 600,000 high quality, culturally sensitive educational materials for K-8 in mathematic, science, and language arts and reading for select Sub-Saharan African countries.

After a comprehensive needs assessment was conducted, the focus of the program changed from K-8 to the development of textbooks for secondary education. South Carolina State University is the only university developing material at the secondary level.
