The English Proficiency examination will be administered on Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. in the MLK Auditorium. (Students should arrive at the test site at least 15 minutes before the exam begins.) No student will be allowed to take the test once the exam is in progress. Therefore, it is mandatory that you be prepared to take the exam promptly at 2:00 p.m.
The grammar portion may be taken in the ETS Assessment Center located in Nance Hall, room B117 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, September 3rd – September 15th.
The Speech portion of the examination will be administered on Friday, September 19th, and Friday September 26th from 3:00 pm – 5:00 in the Old Dawn Center Building 1 according to the schedule below:
- Last Name beginning with A-G - 10:00-11:00 a.m.
- Last Name beginning with H-M - 11:000-12:00 a.m.
- Last Name beginning with N-T - 02:00-3:00 p.m.
- Last Name beginning with U-Z - 03:00-04:00 p.m.
It is mandatory that all parts of the examination be taken during this time. Anyone missing any part of the examination will not receive a grade for the English Proficiency Exam.
*All three parts of this examination must be completed during the testing period. No make-ups will be given.
REQUIREMENTS:
The examination consists of objective questions (concerned with grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and diction), a two-page essay to be written on a topic chosen by the English faculty, and a speech segment.
TRANSFER STUDENTS:
If you are a transfer student and have taken the English Proficiency at another institution, it is the policy of South Carolina State University that you must retake the examination at this institution.
PREPARING FOR THE EXAM:
For needed assistance, students are encouraged to contact the Computer-Assisted Writing Center, consult with regular faculty in English composition, audit pertinent courses and employ private tutors or programmed instruction.
EXAMINATION RESULTS:
Your departmental chair will notify you of your test results.
STUDENTS WHO FAIL THE EXAM:
Any student who fails the examination will be required to enroll in E 152 – Practical English in the Department of English and Modern Languages.
NO STUDENT WILL BE PERMITTED TO RETAKE THE EXAM.
