Members of the South Carolina State University Military Alumni Association (SCSUMAA) are set to return to campus on 18 April 2008 for their biannual meeting. The meeting will be held in the auditorium of Staley Hall, and will begin at 8:30 a.m. The meeting will be preceded by the “Bulldog Run.” Participants will meet at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton (SHM) Memorial Center at 6 a.m.
The Military Alumni Association was founded five years ago as a subchapter to the SC State National Alumni Association. The mission of the SCSUMAA is to support the ROTC program as well as the University. SCSUMAA members are graduates of the ROTC program at SC State, as well as graduates from Claflin University and Voorhees College, who completed ROTC at SC State.
To date, 2007 officers have earned a commission through the ROTC program at SC State, most especially, 13 who have achieved the general officer status.
Other events planned include the 2008 Hall of Fame Induction. The 2008 inductees are: Colonel Willie L. Frazier (Claflin University ’75) Colonel (Chaplin) James E. Walker (South Carolina State University ’77) Colonel Gloria A. Lee (Claflin University ’83). The induction ceremony will be held in the Barbara Vaughann Recital Hall in the Fine Arts Center on campus, and begin at 11 a.m. The ceremony will be followed by a reception and bust mounting.
The community is invited to attend all events.
Some of the VIP’s expected to return for this year’s events include: Major General Abraham J. Turner ‘76 and Colonel (Retired) Fred Dowdy ’49. COL. Dowdy was among the first six officers to earn a commission from SC State.
