SC State Hosts Week of the Young Child

In conjunction with the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s (NAEYC) Week of the Young Child (WOYC), April 19-25, 2009, the SC State Department of Education will host their 9th annual (WOYC) community event on Monday, April 20, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.


The event, co-sponsored by the South Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children and SC State’s department of Family and Consumer Sciences, is an effort to raise public awareness of the needs of young children and their families. It also recognizes the early childhood programs that meet those needs.


More than 1,000 children from head start and child care programs in Orangeburg, Calhoun, Allendale, and Bamberg counties, will gather and participate in activities such as storytelling, face painting and music and movement.


The Child Development Learning Center (CDLC) will also host the following activities during the Week of the Young Child:

Family and Friends Day – Storytelling

The SC State family is encouraged to spend special time with children at the CDLC sharing a favorite story.

Law Enforcement Day

Law enforcement officers will visit and display equipment and vehicles for children to see. This will also be an opportunity for children to become comfortable and know that police officers are their friends.

Policy & Advocacy Day

Letter writing and Phone-a-thon Campaign to Legislators

CDLC children, parents, teachers, and students will engage in a letter writing and telephone campaign to South Carolina Legislators advocating for quality care for young children and funding for early care and education programs.

Public Service Announcements with WSSB & WSPX
Featuring Kids Say the ‘Darndest’ Things


SC State’s radio station, WSSB and Orangeburg Gospel Station, WSPX, will air public service announcements providing parents with news they can use about early care and education.

Mall Madness

Information about the CDLC and staff members will be on display at the Prince of Orange Mall, which tells the CDLC story to shoppers.
