STI LogoThis summer, high school students from across the Palmetto State will have an opportunity to learn more about the transportation industry through SC State’s annual Summer Transportation Institute (STI), July 5 to July 31, 2009.

The four-week residential program is a structured learning opportunity for youth in the secondary school systems of South Carolina. The program is sponsored by SC State’s James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Office of Civil Rights, The S.C. Division Office of FHWA and the S.C. Department of Transportation.

According to STI Director Larrie B. Butler, the curriculum will expose students to new frontiers and adventures such as highway design, transportation of people and cargo, intermodalism, laws, regulations, safety, environmentalism and career opportunities.

In addition, students will participate in SAT prep courses, computer training, reading and writing enhancement skills, field trips, student projects, school-to-work transition and time management.

Sixteen ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students will receive full scholarships to participate in the four-week summer program. Scholarships will include: tuition, equipment and supplies, lab fees, speakers, workshops and handouts, facility usage, meals, field trips and instruction. Notification of scholarship awards will be made by the Summer Transportation Institute for each student selected by no later than June 5, 2009.
