SC State will formally welcome the class of 2013 and other new students at its annual Fall Convocation, which will be held at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial (SHM) Center on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009 at 3 p.m.
This year’s Fall Convocation theme is “Embracing Excellence through Scholarship and Service.”
In addition to being introduced to the SC State family, students will become familiar with all student organizations, athletic programs, and the academic protocol in higher education.
The keynote address will be given by Stephen G. Peters, CEO and President of The Peters Group, a national education consulting company; and partner with CaseNEX, LLC, an online professional development company founded at the University of Virginia. The Peters Group has a track record of creating and sustaining success in schools and districts by supporting educators through a three step process of teaching and learning.
Peters is also founder of the nationally recognized Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Club programs which provide options for thousands of at-risk and honor students throughout the United States. The Gentlemen’s Club has been featured on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” as well as “America, America,” which broadcasts to two million viewers in Portugal and Brazil.
During his 28 years in education, Peters has served as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and director of secondary education. Most of his experiences have been in schools that made significant growth in short periods of time, thus resulting in both national and state Blue Ribbon distinction.
Peters is also author of the bestselling book, “Do You Know Enough About Me to Teach Me,” which is being used throughout the United States as an effective tool for reaching disadvantaged and at-risk youth. His newly released book, “Teaching to Capture and Inspire all Learners,” is also a bestseller and will serve as a catalyst for changing and sustaining school culture. He is a contributing author for the Educational Leadership series, “Engaging Every Learner.”
Peters has served on panels in Washington, D.C. as an education expert with former U.S. Secretary of Education, Dr. Rod Paige. Peters also works on university business advisory boards and investment group advisory boards where he acted as president.
