The Department of Social Sciences at SC State University will host guest speaker Dr. Bettie Rose Horne, 3rd Congressional District Commissioner to the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, during the Social Sciences Speakers’ Forum. The forum will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, beginning with a morning session at 10 a.m. and an afternoon session at 2 p.m. in Nance Hall, Room 204 on the campus of SC State.
The Social Sciences Speakers’ Forum is an initiative to bring distinguished personalities to SC State to discuss topical issues such as professional and continuing education, politics, law, and employment.
During her visit, Dr. Horne will provide students with vital information concerning how to prepare for matriculation into graduate level studies, as well as information concerning best practices for success in their chosen careers.
Prior to her current position, Horne served as a faculty member and administrator at Lander University in Greenwood, S.C.; vice president for academic affairs at Abraham Baldwin College in Tifton, Ga.; and associate vice chancellor of faculty and academic affairs at the University System of Georgia in Atlanta, Ga.
Horne has served for three years on state-wide committees named by Governor Mark Sanford to review the executive budget and the role of higher education in South Carolina. She currently serves as chairperson of the Academic and Licensing Committee and vice chairperson of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education.
Presently, Horne is a board member of the following organizations: Greenwood Kiwanis, Greenwood Food Bank, the Greenwood Homeless Shelter Project, the Guardian ad Litem Program for children in foster care, Teaching Fellows of Lander University, and the South Carolina Center for Educators’ Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement.
Horne completed her Doctor of Philosophy degree in linguistics from the University of South Carolina (USC) in Columbia, S.C.
Horne is the wife of Finis Horne, former basketball coach and athletics director at Lander University, mother of twin daughters Sabra and Nina, and grandmother of Emma.
