SC State University Hosts Alumnus and Board of Visitors Chairperson, During Executive Speaker Series

SC State University will host executive speaker Jackie Steele, SC State Alumnus ‘72 and Corporate Labor Relations Manager at Georgia-Pacific in Atlanta, Ga., during the University Executive Speaker Series (ESS).  The event will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010 at noon in the Belcher Hall fourth floor Auditorium.

Steele’s topic will be:Human Resource Management in Corporate America Today.”

Steele has more than 29 years of experience as a human resources (HR) executive. He has held leadership positions in many HR disciplines, to include labor and employee relations, training and development, organizational development, equal employment opportunity (EEO), staffing, and compensation and benefits.

Currently, Steele serves as corporate labor relations manager with Georgia-Pacific (G-P) in Atlanta, Ga. G-P is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of tissue, packaging, paper, pulp, building products, cellulose and related chemicals. The company employs approximately 50,000 people at more than 300 locations in North America, South America and Europe.

As corporate labor relations manager at G-P, Steele’s responsibilities include labor negotiations, supervisory training, company advocate in labor arbitrations and other regulatory matters, process improvement and internal consultant for organizational assessments.

Prior to joining G-P, Steele served as the vice president of Human Resources for the Containerboard Division of MeadWestvaco Corporation. Other employment history includes director of Employee Relations with Mead Containerboard, director of Human Resources with Avery Label and manager of Human Resources with Crown Zellerbach/James River Corporation.

Steele received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in sociology from SC State University, and a master’s degree in human resource management from Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. He has also completed executive training programs at the University of Michigan, Harvard University and Cornell University.

Steele serves as the chairperson of SC State University’s Board of Visitors. He is also an active member of the SC State Alumni Chapter in Atlanta, Ga., and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in Marietta, Ga.  Steele is also a servant leader at New Birth Baptist Church in Lithonia, Ga. He is a member of several organizations to include the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Labor and Employee Relations Association and the Special Forces Association (U.S. Army).

Steele served eight years active duty with the United States Army at Fort Bragg, N.C., Fort Benning, Ga., South Korea and Fort Ord, Calif.
