On Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at noon in the Belcher Hall Auditorium, SC State University’s Executive Speaker Series will feature Wanda James, owner/operator of four McDonald’s in the Florence area. James will speak on the topic, “Owning a Business: The Essentials.”
SC State students and the public are invited to hear how James’ career evolved and how they can apply her knowledge to their respective fields. James received her Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Southern University-Baton Rouge in Baton Rouge, La. She later received an MBA degree in marketing from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Miss.
James’ career includes stints as a small business development advisor at the Department of Economic Development for the state of Louisiana, and as a budget analyst with Litton Ships Systems. In August 1995, James and her husband, Arnett James, became members of the McDonald’s Corporation as franchisees, requiring them to relocate to Marion, S.C. Although the restaurant was sold in February 2010, this opportunity offered to them in 1995 marked the beginning of their career in the fast food industry. They continued to progress, assuming ownership of their second McDonald’s restaurant in Florence, S.C. in 1998. Other restaurants were added in 2002 and 2006.
James is a member of several organizations, to include membership in the Purchasing Committee, the National Black Operators Association Executive Board, the Raleigh Region Black Operators Association, the McDonald’s Women Owner/Operators Network, Boys and Girls Club of America Executive Board and Foster Care and Adoption Review Board. In 2009, she was named SC Black Family Expo Business Woman of the Year. She was also recently featured in “She Magazine” and The Community Times. James is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
James and her family are active members of St. Anne Catholic Church in Florence, S.C. She and her husband are the proud parents of two sons: Alex James, a rising seventh grader at Florence Christian School in Florence, S.C. and Arnett James, IV, a junior at SC State University.
