Radio Voice of SC State University to Host Annual Membership Drive

Friday, December 03, 2010

WSSBSC State’s radio station, WSSB 90.3 FM, will host their annual membership drive. This event will take place Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010 through Friday, Dec. 3, 2010 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Nance Hall, room B-114, located on the campus of SC State University.

During WSSB’s membership drive, station listeners, SC State University constituents, businesses and local churches will have the opportunity to show their support of the station and to become members of the WSSB family by calling (803) 536-8585 on the designated dates and times. The membership drive goal is 400 new station memberships.

“The purpose and importance of the membership drive is to assist with WSSB’s unmet financial needs.
All funds raised from the membership drive will assist with acquiring state-of-the-art broadcasting equipment to better serve WSSB’s listening audience, and for students to receive proper training, offering an advanced platform to better prepare them as they graduate and enter the radio broadcasting job market,” says Carl A’see, manager for WSSB.

All funding obtained from the membership drive will also allow WSSB to continue to provide great music, news and educational programming. “WSSB has always been known to serve its listening audience through unique and innovative programming, and because WSSB has 80,000 watts of power, making it the most powerful non-commercial college radio station in the State, support will allow the station to continue to reach listeners in Orangeburg, Calhoun and Bamberg Counties, as well as parts of Charleston, Aiken and Florence Counties,” notes A’see.

Those who wish to support WSSB’s efforts are asked to contact the University during the membership drive by calling on the designated dates, or by visiting the station located on the SC State campus. Premium gifts are awarded for various membership levels, ranging from jazz and blues CD’s, high-definition radios, free DJ services for an event, t-shirts, coffee mugs, cups and much more. Donations may be from $40 to $1,000.  According to A’see, however, any support is welcome to advance WSSB’s mission, which is to grant SC State an outlet for the presentation of enrichment programs of an academic, cultural, and artistic and informational temperament.

Since its inception on March 15, 1985, WSSB has developed a flourishing music format with a primary focus of smooth jazz with a blend of R&B oldies, gospel, blues and hip-hop. You can listen to your favorite melodies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Affiliated with National Public Radio (NPR), American Urban Radio Network (AURN) and American Public Media (APM), WSSB also supplies listeners with news, sports and current events. WSSB is totally committed to providing life-long learning opportunities for the citizens of the state, and for students with diverse talents and backgrounds in a caring, nurturing learning environment.
