In keeping with the mission of SC State University’s Accounting Program to provide students with experiences required for a quality learning environment, an Accounting Speaker Series is being implemented during the Spring 2011 semester. The series is a collaboration between the accounting faculty, Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Honor Society and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). Each month, students will be exposed to a professional accountant from public accounting, industry, government or a non-profit entity to get useful advice on preparing for a career in accounting.
Professor Anthony Masino, accounting professor and coordinator for the series, says, "one of the goals of the series is to motivate more of our graduates to become certified public accountants (CPAs). As students learn more about the opportunities for CPAs, they will aspire to attain the necessary skills to become certified,” he says.
Neil Brown, financial consultant for Burkett Financial Services in Columbia, S.C., will kick-off the series on Monday, Jan. 24, 2011 at 1 p.m. in Belcher Hall, room 407. Brown is a CPA and a certified financial planner (CFP). He has significant experience and expertise in advising executives and employees of Fortune 500 companies on financial planning issues, financial services and tax issues. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, South Carolina Association of CPAs, Columbia Estate Planning Council, Columbia Tax Study Group and the Financial Planning Association. He is also the program coordinator and lead instructor for the CFP© Certification Education Program at Midlands Technical College in Columbia, S.C., and national instructor for Keir Educational Resources’ CFP © review, Surgent McCoy CPE, LLC and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).
