SC State University will host executive speaker, Elmer B. Polite, chief financial officer (CFO) for the Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center (SVRMC) in Emporia, Va. The event will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011 at noon in the Belcher Hall fourth floor Auditorium, located on the SC State campus. Polite will speak on the topic: “Accounting Today: After the Enron Case.”
As CFO, Polite serves as an integral part of the SVRMC administration team. His primary responsibility is to assure the hospital is financially sound, all compliance requirements are met, new streams of revenue are evaluated, capital is effectively managed, staff is managed, projects are managed and evaluated, and the revenue cycle is streamlined. The departments that report to the CFO are accounting, the business office, health information, materials management, dietary, registration and information technology.
Before joining SVRMC, Polite was assistant CFO with Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, S.C. SVRMC and Springs Memorial Hospital are two of more than 126 hospitals owned by Community Health Systems, the largest for-profit hospital system in the United States.
Polite’s other previous work experiences include senior financial analyst for Sisters of Charity Providence Hospital in Columbia, S.C. and an online instructor for the University of Phoenix. Polite has had experiences with financial systems in over seven sectors, including manufacturing, distribution, city government, healthcare, real estate, insurance and retail entrepreneurship, such as Subway and the Athletic Store.
Polite earned the Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in 1996 and a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting in 2003 from SC State University. He received the Master of Business Administration degree in finance in 2006 from DeVry University in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. He is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
Polite is married to Tonya and they have two sons, Isaiah, 11; Jase, 2; and a daughter, Tatyana, 17. He and his wife enjoy traveling, watching live sporting events, surfing the internet, exercising, and reading business articles and success stories.
