Jane Hiller, director of the Recycling Education Center for Sonoco Products in Hartsville, S.C., will speak on the topic, “Going Green: What Businesses Need to Know and Do,” during SC State University’s upcoming Executive Speaker Series (ESS). The event will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at noon in Belcher Hall’s fourth floor Auditorium.
Founded in 1899, Sonoco Products Company is a $3.6 billion global manufacturer of industrial and consumer products and provider of packaging services to customers in 85 nations. From its headquarters in Hartsville, S.C., and more than 300 manufacturing and sales locations in 35 countries, approximately 17,500 employees produce packaging for a variety of industries and for many of the world’s most recognized brands.
At Sonoco, Hiller coordinates a school recycling collection program for six school districts in the greater Columbia area and chairs the South Carolina Green Step Schools Initiative, a component of the South Carolina Resource Conservation Challenge. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina (EEASC).
For her work, Hiller has been recognized and honored with several awards and recognitions, including: The Illinois Environmental Educator of the Year Award, 1994; SC Keep America Beautiful Environmental Program of the Year Award, 2000; Carolina Recycling Association Spotlight Award, 2002; Carolina Recycling Association Recycler of the Year Award, 2004; SC Department of Health and Environmental Control’s (DHEC) Recycle Guys Special Recognition Award, 2005; and the SC Wildlife Federation’s Conservation Communicator of the Year Award, 2006.
Hiller earned education degrees from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. and DePaul University in Chicago, Ill.
