SC State University’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (DFCS) and the Department of Education (DOE), in conjunction with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), will host their 11th annual Week of the Young Child (WOYC) community event. This event will take on Monday, April 11, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Oliver C. Dawson Stadium located on the campus of SC State University. There are also several other activities planned during the WOYC. This year’s WOYC theme is: “Early Years are Learning Years.” The NAEYC designates the WOYC dates and theme, while events are planned and implemented by local, state and regional NAEYC affiliates, individual early childhood programs and community organizations providing services to young children and families.
SC State University’s event, co-sponsored by the South Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children (SCAEYC), is an effort to raise public awareness of the needs of young children and their families. “This is a special time designated by our national organization to lend a voice to those who otherwise would not be able to speak for themselves. This is an opportunity for us to focus on our youngest citizens, our leaders of tomorrow,” said Dr. M. Evelyn Fields, president of the SCAEYC and associate professor at SC State University. “This is extremely important because now is the time to connect them with academic achievement, and that is critical to closing the achievement gap, particularly for our children living in rural South Carolina,” said Fields.
Serving as a traditional celebration at SC State University for more than 10 years, the WOYC event attracts more than 1,000 children from head start and children programs in Orangeburg, Calhoun, Allendale and Bamberg counties. This year, attendees will participate in activities such as storytelling, face painting and music and movement.
