South Carolina State University will host the Fall Commencement Convocation on Saturday, December 13, 2008 in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center (SHM). The Line of March (Processional) will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the Commencement Ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Attendance at the Convocation is required of all candidates for degrees. Requests for permission to graduate “in absentia” should be sent to Dr. George E. Cooper, President.

Rehearsal is scheduled for Friday morning, December 12, 2008 at 8:30 a.m. in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center (SHM). It is important that you be present and report on time. When you enter the stadium, you are requested to go to the area posted for your College/School to find your seat assignment. Commencement Marshals will assist you as needed.

Commencement Participation Policy

Students may march in the Commencement Ceremony if they meet one of the three criteria listed below:

Undergraduate Students

  1. All degree requirements are completed including required examinations.
  2. With all other degree requirements met, there are no more than 4 credits remaining for graduation completion.
  3. With all other degree requirements met, there are no more than 4 credits remaining for graduation completion and one proficiency requirement.
  4. Students approved to march in the Commencement Ceremony under the criteria 2 or 3 above, must sign an Agreement of Commencement Participation in the Registrar’s Office before being allowed to march.

Note: All state mandated or disciple required exams must be passed before being eligible to march.

Graduate Students

All Perspective Graduates
Note: There will be no exceptions to the Commencement Participation Policy.

Each member of the Graduating Class will receive (6) tickets for guests to be admitted into the SHM. Only those guests with tickets will be admitted into the Center. Please keep tickets in a safe place, as they are the only way your selected guests will be permitted to enter SHM. Also, no additional tickets will be issued because of limited seating space. For everyone’s safety, there will be no exception to the ticket requirement. All other family members and friends, in excess of the (6) tickets limit, must view the Commencement Ceremony at the satellite site. Persons submitting fraudulent tickets will not be permitted to enter SHM.

The satellite site will be located in the Fine Arts Center directly in front of SHM.

Please report to Staley Hall immediately after your Commencement Ceremony to pickup your diploma. Diplomas will be available for pickup until 2:00 p.m. Diplomas that are not picked up will be mailed to permanent addresses within thirty (30) working days after Commencement. Picture ID is required to pickup diploma.

Summa Cum Laude 3.75 or above
Magna Cum Laude 3.50 - 3.74
Cum Laude 3.00 - 3.49

Transfer Students - The highest honor for transfer students is Magna Cum Laude. A minimum of sixty-six (60) hours must be earned at South Carolina State University (Refer to University Catalog Page 42).

Please ensure that a final grade is reported for each course that you are taking this semester by checking Bulldogs Connection at  A grade that is not reported will delay your graduation clearance.  For a missing grade, please contact your instructor immediately.  Grades are due December 5, 2008.

Graduation Information is available to all students who applied for graduation and it does not imply that you have been approved or cleared for graduation. If you are cleared for graduation, you will not receive any more communication from this office. However, if you are not cleared, you will receive notification as soon as that determination has been made.

Students who are currently taking courses at other institutions to complete requirements for graduation, should have official transcripts or official statements of the grades earned sent from the Registrar’s Office of that institution by December 8, 2008

Families, friends, guests and others who will be attending the December 2008 Commencement Convocation should enter the campus via the Golf Avenue and Russell Street entrances. Handicap parking will be between Staley Hall and SHM.

Female graduates are asked to wear black dresses and black shoes. Male graduates are asked to wear white shirts, black slacks and black shoes.
