The First Lady of South Carolina State University

Dr. Monedia K. Elzey

South Carolina State University First Lady, Dr. Monedia Elzey, is the wife of the University’s 11th President, Thomas J. Elzey. Upon the couple’s arrival at SC State in the summer of 2013, Dr. Elzey quickly took center stage, working alongside her husband to elevate the local, national and global profile of the institution. She actively supports the president’s mission by her involvement in campus and student life which spans from the planning and coordination of university and community initiatives, to the mentoring of students to ensure that each SC State student has an educational experience that prepares them for real-world challenges in a global society.

A native of Woodstock, VA, Dr. Elzey received her Ph.D. in Couple and Family Therapy from Drexel University, a Master of Social Work from Howard University, and a Bachelor of Social Work from Radford University.

For more than 17 years, she has been a psychotherapist in private practice and has worked with behavioral health organizations.  She has held various positions in management and direct service including program manager for a home health care agency; program director for a court- appointed foster care advocacy program; administrative assistant for an employment and training program; school social worker; and juvenile probation officer.

Of her numerous personal and professional achievements, Dr. Elzey has been most committed to advocacy and volunteerism. She has held leadership positions in volunteer organizations such as The Fairfax County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she was Chairperson of the Ways and Means Committee, and The Citadel Women’s Club, where she served as President, overseeing fundraising activities that earned each organization over $12,000. She has also served on the board of Women Organized Against Rape (WOAR) in Philadelphia, PA and the San Francisco Court Appointed Special Advocates (SFCASA) Program in San Francisco, CA.

Dr. Elzey and her husband, Thomas, have two adult daughters; Tommi, a manager in a major retail department store, and Briana, an attorney. Both reside in Philadelphia, PA.
