Introducing The First Lady’s Boutique: Professional Attire for Students
The First Lady’s Boutique is a new initiative on the campus of South Carolina State University (SCSU) established to benefit financially challenged students. Previewing on November 8, 2013, on the first floor of the Crawford Engineering building, the purpose of the Boutique is to provide professional attire and accessories, free of charge, to male and female students for job interviews and business-related events. The First Lady’s Boutique is the brain-child of South Carolina State University First Lady, Dr. Monedia Elzey and Interim Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Tamara Hughes, who share a desire to help young adults go out into the world and achieve their dreams of being successful in their chosen career fields.
The goal of The First Lady’s Boutique is to remove as many barriers as possible from a student’s ability to obtain employment upon graduation. Therefore, this initiative extends beyond simply providing attire to include an educational component that addresses a variety of concerns that impact one’s ability to make a good first impression. In exchange for the items, students will be asked to participate in a series of seminars that will teach, among other things, business, social and dining-out etiquette; communication skills; interviewing skills; business versus casual attire; day versus evening make-up; make-up application; hair care; and personal grooming. Access to the clothing and accessories will be restricted to those with a financial need; however, the seminars will be open to all SCSU students who wish to participate.
Please look for information on the seminars and application requirements for the clothing in the coming weeks.
