SC State University is state assisted, but by no means fully supported by the state of South Carolina. State appropriations account for only a percentage of the university's budget and support. Declining state support is a national trend facing many public universities. No state university can be competitive today without significant private support.

Who is contributing financial support?
Gifts come from various sources. The greatest number of gifts are from alumni and friends who recognize the importance of building on SC State’s record of academic excellence.
How does the Foundation support SC State University?
The Foundation exists solely for SC State University. We raise, manage, invest and disburse funds for the advancement of the learning environment at SC State. Through annual giving programs, planned gifts (wills, trusts and other methods of giving) and special-purpose campaigns, the Foundation works with the colleges, programs and units of the university to generate private support from alumni and friends.
What does the Foundation do with contributions?
We do exactly what the donors tell us to do with their gifts. The majority of gifts are designated by donors for a particular college, unit or program. These are called restricted gifts.
