SC State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director of the James E. Clyburn Transportation Center. The mission of the Center is to assist Federal, State and local transportation agencies, and the private sector with the development, maintenance and advancement of an efficient transportation system for South Carolina, by increasing the number of qualified individuals entering the transportation profession and through research. A major focus of the Centers inter-modal research, education and technology transfer program is to recruit and train a diverse transportation workforce. Some of the Centers current research capabilities include bio-diesel research, environmental justice, protection and policy, highway safety assessment, intelligent systems research, rural transportation research, transportation safety, systems and solutions planning. The Executive Director will report directly to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development and provide vision, leadership and administration as Director of the Universitys Center of Excellence in Transportation. The core function of the position is leadership and management of the James E. Clyburn University Transportation and Research Center in order to advance transportation research, education and training, with specific emphasis on applied research with the transportation industry. The director will work closely with engineering and technology faculty to develop the centers partnerships with faculty, students and industry. Responsibilities include: interacting with campus administrators, faculty, students, staff, and the general public to help ensure that the land-grant mission of the university is supported in the areas of teaching, research and service through undergraduate and graduate studies, research contracts and grants and service learning. The Executive Director of the Transportation Center will assist the VP for Research and Economic Development in the fiscal management of the Centers research funds from the federal and state sources and oversight of the all research and training programs. |

| Qualifications: | |||||
Minimum qualifications include: an earned doctorate in transportation, business, engineering or related discipline or commensurate experience in these areas at a senior/executive management level; a record of teaching, research, scholarship, and creativity to support a tenured faculty appointment in one of the universitys academic departments; three or more years of successful academic/corporate administrative experience; knowledge of procedures and requirements relating to evaluating, planning, organizing, and administering educational and service delivery programs to rural and urban communities; direct experience in grant administration that reflects a thorough understanding of federal and other sponsors regulations; and knowledge of the laws, regulations and policies related to the protection of human subjects, animal welfare, conflict of interest and scientific misconduct; knowledge of the philosophy and mission of an 1890 land grant university; a proven ability to write proposals for external funding in keeping with one or more of the research priority areas of the Division of Research and Economic Development which includes transportation, environmental policy and community and rural economic. |

| Special Requirements: | |||||
A strong candidate would be expected to build alliances with business, government, and cultural entities that lead to increased resources for the University and enhancing its collaborative and partnership efforts. A strong candidate should be able to demonstrate success implementing new initiatives in academia, government agencies and/or industry, including applied research with industry. Ability to work effectively with others 5. Ability to develop and maintain effective collaborations with on and off campus constituencies. |
