SC State University Reaccredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)

Tuesday, December 07, 2010

Today, the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states, reaffirmed South Carolina State University’s (SC State) accreditation.

“Accreditation indicates that SC State University has met exemplary standards of quality, capacity and effectiveness,” SC State’s President George Cooper said. “SC State is proud to be accredited by SACS, which in my sincere opinion is the ultimate process that assesses a University’s success in the fulfillment of its mission and continual efforts to enhance the overall academic collegial experience.”

SC State's reaffirmation process began in Spring 2007 with the identification of the leadership team and compliance committee co-chairpersons. The process allowed SC State’s administrators, faculty, staff and students to conduct an internal institutional analysis of compliance to both Core and Comprehensive Standards established by SACS.  There were nine steps in the reaffirmation process with one of the most important components of the reaffirmation process being the institutional development of a Quality Enhancement Plan, or QEP.

SC State’s QEP is “PUSH Writing” or “Preparing Undergraduates for Scholarly Holistic Writing.”  The primary goal of SC State’s QEP is to improve freshman level student learning in the area of writing.

The reaccreditation process was of extreme importance to SC State; and the University’s diligence and unwavering commitment in completing a comprehensive review of its operations and productivity, led to achieving that goal.

“Although reaffirmed, SC State’s vision is still to "become one of the top 25 public universities among peer institutions, as measured by recognized independent ratings," and the University will continue to fully embrace the concept of “A New STATE of Mind” through continuous assessment and improvement of its programs and services,” Dr. Cooper stated. “Again, I commend the faculty and staff members who devoted a significant amount of dedicated time preparing for SC State’s reaffirmation. Their commitment to excellence has paid off for the SC State University and ultimately, for our students.”
