Whitney Johnson had 28 points and Corin Adams added 21 to lead Morgan State to a 75-56 win over South Carolina State Saturday in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest. The victory gave the visitors a sweep of this year’s series with the Lady Bulldogs, who lost 51-47 to the Lady Bears at Baltimore Jan. 20. Morgan State, with the victory, improved to 13-10 overall and 8-5 in the MEAC. The Lady Bears are bidding to post their first winning season since a 17-12 mark during the 1999-2000 campaign.
The Lady Bulldogs, who had their two-game win streak snapped with the loss, were led by guard Brittany Baity with 17 points, including a 7-7 effort from the charity stripe. Jenell Moore and Sophilia Hipps each had nine points for SC State and Kristin Johnson added a game-high eight rebounds to go along with four points in the loss, which dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 7-18 on the season and 5-10 in league games.
Adams, who had 15 of total in the first half, opened the scoring with a 3-pointer at 18:42 of the period, but SC State came back to go ahead 10-5 when Baity made two free throws with 15:34 on the clock.
The visitors regained the lead at 14-13 on a layup by Johnson, and there were two ties and four lead changes over the next five minutes before the Lady Bears went on a 11-2 run to build a 33-23 edge with 4:40 left. Morgan led 37-25 at the break. The Lady Bears started the second half with a 17-9 run to build a 20-point cushion – 54-34 – on a layup by Johnson with 13:06 to play. The closest SC State came out that was 13 points, at 69-56, when Baity made two foul shots with 3:28 left.
Both SC State teams return to action Monday, when Coppin State pays a visit to Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. The women’s contest gets underway at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the men’s contest at 9 p.m. in an ESPNU telecast.
