SC State University’s assistant vice president for Finance, Joseph M. Pearman, Jr., was recently notified that SC State had received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the sixth year in a row.
“Being named the recipient of the National Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting is an honor for me,” says Pearman. “The award reflects the culmination of all of the hard work that the Finance Division expends throughout the year. It also provides a comfort level to University’s stakeholders that we are fully and properly reporting the activities of the University operations,” he continued.
The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. It is awarded by the GFOA of the United States and Canada, a nonprofit professional association serving approximately 17,500 government finance professionals with offices in Chicago, Ill. and Washington, DC.
“I want to commend Mr. Pearman for his outstanding support of the Division of Finance and receipt of this award, but those who were most influential in this year’s award were Mr. Ernesto Torres, the University’s comptroller and his team,” said John E. Smalls, senior vice president for Finance, Facilities, and MIS. “Mr. Torres’ 30-year experience in higher education finance divisions has assisted SC State in ensuring that even during the tough economic times that we have faced, we are managing those funds entrusted to us,” Smalls continued.
