SC State’s Army ROTC Program will host the 2011 Spring Army ROTC Ball on Friday, April 15, 2011 at 6 p.m. The event will take place at the K.W. Green Student Center’s Bulldog Lounge on the campus of SC State University. The theme for this year’s annual event is “Continuing the Legacy of Leadership Excellence.” Formal attire is required.
This year’s speaker, Brig. Gen. Frederick J. Johnson (Retired), ’76, is a devoted servant leader to this nation. Johnson was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve in l976 upon receiving a bachelor’s degree in music education from South Carolina State University. He also earned a master’s degree in strategic studies from the United States Army War College.
After completing the Armor’s Officer Basic Course, he served as a platoon leader, scout platoon leader, executive officer and troop commander for various units in Korea and Fort Knox, Ky. He commanded a recruiting company in N.Y. and served as the manpower analysis officer and personnel officer for the 35th Signal Brigade (Airborne), 18th Airborne Corps. In 1990, brigadier general Johnson transitioned into the Alabama Army National Guard where he served in numerous staff level positions in operations, training and intelligence. Upon his promotion to brigadier general, he was assigned as the assistant adjutant general, Army Forces Headquarters and the commanding general of the 62nd Troop Command of the Alabama National Guard.
Johnson has received numerous awards to include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal with 1 service star, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserves Medal with silver hour glass device and the Airborne Badge. Johnson is currently employed as the customer accounting manager at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, Ohio.
This year, Johnson will receive the honor of being inducted into the 2011 SC State ROTC Hall of Fame Class. “Brig. Gen. Johnson (Retired) is a motivated speaker and his message will motivate our cadets to strive for greatness and to be an example for others to emulate,” says Lt. Col. Theopia Deas.
