In the women’s contest of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader, MEAC Player of the Year candidate Rashida Suber poured in 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds to power Coppin State to a 64-47 victory over the Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by freshman Sophilia Hipps, the only SC State player in double figures, with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists. Kristin Johnson had seven points to go along with six boards, and Jenell Moore contributed a team-high seven rebounds in the loss. Coach Tonya Mackey’s team dipped to 7-19 overall and 5-11 in the MEAC with their second straight loss after winning two in a row.
The visiting Lady Eagles, who clinched a third straight MEAC regular season title, also got 14 points and five assists from Shalamar Oakley. Coach Derek Brown’s team (19-6, 14-0 MEAC) won its 13th straight contest, its 37th straight regular-season conference game, and the 44th consecutive contest against MEAC teams, dating back to 2005.
Coppin took an early lead in the contest, however, the host battled back to go take a 16-13 on a layup by Brittany Gillespie with 12:18 on the first-half clock. The Lady Bulldogs went scoreless over the next nine minutes while
The Lady Eagles built a 29-16 advantage with 3:58 showing. SC State came back to close the gap to 29-22 at the half. Coppin, however, took command early in the second half, building a double-digit lead in the first four minutes of the period and coasted home.
