NORFOLK STATE – For the second time in as many outings, South Carolina State let a big second-half lead get away as the Lady Bulldogs lost 68-55 to Norfolk State Monday in the final regular season game for Coach Tonya Mackey’s team.
The Lady Bulldogs closed out the 2006-07 campaign 7-21 overall and 5-13 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The SC State women open play in the MEAC tournament at Raleigh, NC in one of three women’s play-in games on Tuesday or Wednesday.
SC State, which saw a 15-point second-half lead evaporate in a 63-54 loss at Hampton on Saturday, was ahead of Norfolk State 40-29 with 17:05 left in the contest, but the host Lady Spartans went on 18-6 run to seize the lead at 47-46 on two free throws by Areya Walker with 8:41 remaining.
The Lady Bulldogs could never regain the momentum showed in the first half, and Norfolk State closed the game with a 21-9 run to secure the victory, which was marked by a 24-point turn-around in the second half. The results were eerily similar to SC State’s collapse at Hampton Saturday when the Lady Pirates used a similar 24-point swing in the second half to earn a win.
Brittany Baity had 12 points and Brittany Gillespie came off the bench for 11 to lead the Lady Bulldogs in the loss. Jenell Moore led SC State on the boards with seven rebounds to go along with four points.
Norfolk State, which trailed 35-26 at the half before rallying, got 18 points and a whopping 14 rebounds from Walker. Ebony Gibbs added 15 points and six boards and Toia Johnson 14 points in the victory for the Lady Spartans who improved to 5-22 and 4-13 in the MEAC.
