ORANGEBURG, SC – The South Carolina State men’s basketball team closes out the regular season today when the Bulldogs host Winston-Salem State in a 7 p.m. contest at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Only the men will be in action as the SC State women completed their regular season campaign on Monday and open play Tuesday in the MEAC Tournament (Mar. 6-10) at Raleigh, NC.
Admission for today’s contest is $6 for reserve seats, $3 for general admission and free for students and persons 17-and under.
Bulldog seniors Brian Mason and Travis Jones, along with four senior cheerleaders, will be honored in a special pre-game ceremony. Cheerleaders to be recognized are Monique Walker, Rahn Scott, Jackie Smalls and Kay Smith.
Coach Jamal Brown’s team (12-16, 10-8 MEAC) hopes to close out the season on a positive note and send the seniors out with a win. SC State lost its last outing 70-65 at Norfolk State on Monday, snapping a three-game winning streak.
The visiting Rams (5-23), who last year moved to Division I and will become a member of the MEAC next season, have been idle since Feb. 21 when they dropped an 83-68 decision at North Dakota State.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs today will be their two seniors – Mason and Jones. Mason, a Dominica, West Indies native, is the team’s top scorer with a 12.7 average and is tied for with freshman Jason Flagler for rebounding honors with 5.6 per outing. Jones, of Orlando, Fla., is second on the team in scoring with a 12.1 average and leads the team in steals with 41.
The Rams will be spearheaded by Darius Floyd and Brian Fisher, who are averaging 11.5 and 10.7 points, respectively.
