SC State University students are committed to empowering and uplifting the community in which they live. Since our establishment, SC State has molded students to be leaders in a global society by providing time and service to individuals. The Alpha Lambda Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is dedicated to shaping the community. On Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. the national fraternity will donate a check in the amount of $2500 to the Free Medical Clinic located in Orangeburg, SC. Unlike other medical clinics the Free Medical Clinic serves residents 200 percent below the poverty line in the following counties: Calhoun County, Bamberg County, Orangeburg County, and Charleston County. The only funding that the clinic receives is through grants. In the fall of 2012, the Alpha Lambda Chapter donated a $1500 check to CASA Family Systems in hopes to help domestic violence victims here in the Orangeburg area.
SC State’s Alpha Lambda Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. was founded December 5, 1931. Forums pertaining to community involvement and service, the Guide Right Program, and Anti-Hazing are three initiatives the chapter has focused on this year. The Guide Right Program is designed for the educational and occupational guidance of youth, primarily inspirational and informational in character. The Alpha Lambda Chapter spearheads a Guide Right Program at Felton Laboratory School each week where they tutor, mentor, and educate young leaders of tomorrow. The Alpha Lambda Chapter also participates in recreational activities where they help coach the basketball teams at the school. The fraternity has taken a national zero tolerance stances on hazing, and the Alpha Lambda Chapter incorporates this into the everyday college life on SC State’s campus. They also host anti-hazing forums monthly in hopes of deleting the issue of hazing from college campuses nationwide. As far as community involvement is concerned the chapter tries it’s best to improve the relationship between the community of Orangeburg, and SC State University. Through donations and community service the chapter has exceled in this endeavor.
