James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center to Host National Summer Transportation Institute

SC State University’s James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center will host a National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) for rising ninth, 10th and 11th grade students beginning with and orientation session on Sunday, June 16, 2013 and concluding on Friday, July 12, 2013. The commuter institute will be held in the James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center located on the campus of SC State University.

The NSTI provides career orientation and educational experiences to motivate secondary school students toward professions in the field of transportation. SC State University is one of 44 sites selected to host a NSTI for 2013. Students will spend four weeks on some of the most prestigious college/university campuses in the country. NSTI is funded by the U. S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)In 1993, the concept for the NSTI originated at SC State University as a pilot project through the cooperative efforts of SC State University, the S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT), and the FHWA’s South Carolina Division Office. In 1999, the NSTI became the first transportation education program for secondary school students to be authorized by Congress in the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st century.

To participate in the NSTI students must be a first time participant in NSTI; must have an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering or Transportation; and must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5. In addition, students must prepare a 300 to 500 word statement of interest; must have a letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor (sealed and on letterhead) and a completed application package submitted by Monday, June 10, 2013.
