Dr. WhitesidesSouth Carolina State University’s 1890 Research Administrator, Dr. Louis Whitesides, was recently named a Certified Research Administrator (CRA) by the Research Administrators Certification Council. This designation makes him one of only three in the state from a historically black institution to earn this honor.

Being a CRA, the highest level of certification research administrators can earn, indicates that Whitesides has the knowledge and expertise necessary to operate a research or sponsored program, including knowledge in project development and financial and general management.

“This award is a testament to how hard Dr. Whitesides works and his desire to operate the SC State 1890 Research Program with the highest degree of skills, knowledge and expertise,” said Delbert Foster, acting vice president of the Division of Research, Economic Development and Public Service. “I’ve worked with him for some time now, so I know he has the experience, ability, determination and dedication necessary to effectively bring to life our vision of improving the quality of life for all the citizens of South Carolina.”

The certification process measures experience and skills in grants and sponsored programs administration, budgeting and accounting, sound fiscal management and workplace, facilities and employee management.

“Being recognized as a certified research administrator is great for SC State and the 1890 Program,” said Whitesides. “Public and private funding agencies will know that SC State has the expertise to handle large grants and that we will properly administer those funds so we can continue our mission of improving South Carolina through research, education and outreach.”

The Research Administrators Certification Council, formed in 1993 as an independent non-profit organization, is composed of active certified research administrators whose role is to certify that an individual, through experience and testing, has the fundamental knowledge necessary to be a professional research or sponsored programs administrator.
