Small, a retired educator and small farmer, and vice-chairman Robert Waldrep, an attorney, were candidates for the position. Waldrep had been serving as interim chair following the departure of Dr. Walter Tobin in June, 2013.
“I feel extremely privileged to have this opportunity to serve the people of South Carolina in this capacity. When I observe the talent and commitment of this board, the president and the members of his leadership team, I am convinced that we are making great strides toward an even greater future for South Carolina State University,” said Small.
A resident of Yemassee, S.C., Small, who was appointed July 2013 to the SC State Board of Trustees, will complete the term of the former chairman until the next election for officers, which will be held September, 2014.
