SC State Women Defeat Ball State 6-1 in Tennis

ORANGEBURG, SC – The South Carolina State women’s tennis team improved to 13-3 Monday with a 6-1 victory over Ball State of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The Lady Bulldogs captured five of six singles and the doubles competition in winning their second straight match and their 12th in the last 13 outings.

Ball State’s, whose only win came at number four singles, dropped to 1-3 on the season.

In doubles, the Lady Bulldogs’ Mirian Cruz and Marcela Rodezno defeated the Cardinals’ Haly Calderwood and Jennifer Pollack 8-6, SC State’s Iveta Blodniece and Yana Lytkina defeated Emma Retter and Polina Askerko 9-8, while Ball State’s Sophie Quist and Christine Stromberg defeated won 9-7 over the Lady Bulldogs’ Vesna Popac and Gisel Brito.

In singles competition, Cruz defeated Quist 6-3, 6-7, 1-0); Rodezno defeated Calderwood 6-1, 6-1; Brito defeated Pollack 6-0, 6-0; Blodniece defeated Retter 6-2, 6-3; and Lytkina defeated Askerko 6-4, 6-4). For Ball State, it was Stromberg defeating Popac 6-3, 6-4.

The women are back in action Wednesday when they meet Boston University in Charleston at 1 p.m., and also play on Thursday when they host East Carolina in Orangeburg at 1 p.m.
