SC State University’s Henderson-Davis Theatre will tell the enchanting children’s story of “Cinderella” with a cultural twist. “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters,” by John Steptoe and adapted by Karen Abbott, will debut at 10 a.m. on Nov. 2 in the Henderson-Davis Theatre.
“Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters” is an African tale that takes audiences on a journey to discover the true meaning of beauty. This fable of pride coming before the fall is a beloved classic that ends with a Cinderella moment. This production is a part of the Drama Program’s Theatre For Youth series.
Following the production, the audience will enjoy an interactive theatre experience with the Henderson-Davis Players and the African dance group, Ujimma, directed by Delvina Wescott. This performance allows the audience to be a part of the magic that happens onstage. After the play, members of the audience will be invited to join the celebration by participating in a “jam” session featuring dance and African drums.
“We have always provided the community with quality entertainment and we want to celebrate the support of Henderson-Davis by providing discounts to the public,” said Ursula Robinson, assistant professor in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
In recognition of the theatre’s community involvement, the Henderson-Davis Players are hosting “Play with the Players Day,” which includes the fairy tale production and interactive sessions. “Play with the Players Day” coincides with the opening day of “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters,” and offers discounted prices to faith and community-based groups of 10 or more students.
The production will run during the university’s week of Homecoming, from Nov. 5 to Nov. 8 with two shows at 10 a.m. and noon.
