South Carolina State University will inaugurate Thomas J. Elzey, as its 11th president on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center, located on the campus of SC State University. The theme for the inauguration is “Pursuing Excellence Through Legacy and Leadership.”
On April 18, 2013, the Board of Trustees named Elzey president of SC State. On June 15, 2013, he assumed the responsibilities as president.
A native of Chicago, Ill. President Elzey has more than 30 years of senior administrative experience.
Throughout his career, President Elzey has gained a reputation as a dynamic change agent and national leader in academia, bringing an impressive record of fiscal responsibility. Before he assumed his role as president at SC State, he served as the executive vice president for Finance, Administration and Operations at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.
Prior to The Citadel, President Elzey was the senior vice president for finance and chief financial officer at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pa. He also served as senior vice president and chief financial officer at Howard University in Washington, DC.
With a commitment to academic excellence and a zealous attitude, President Elzey is dedicated to transforming SC State University to an institution of national acclaim by creating unique programs.
Under the guidance of President Elzey, two new Master of Science degree programs, energy and environmental science and bio-engineering sciences, were developed and subsequently approved by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education.
Other accomplishments include improvement of campus grounds and increased giving of scholarships from the university’s foundation, alumni and individual supporters.
Elzey is married to Dr. Monedia K. Elzey. They have two daughters, Briana and Tommi.
