James H. Speed Jr., president and chief executive officer of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, will share his expertise during the SC State University School of Business’ Executive Speakers Series on Wednesday, Mar. 19 at noon in the fourth floor auditorium, Belcher Hall.

Speed will address a range of relevant topics drawing on his years of experience in executive roles for the likes of Hardee’s Food Systems, Inc. and currently North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company.

 


Speed completed his undergraduate degree at North Carolina Central University. In 1979, he received a Master of Business Administration degree from Atlanta University. That year, he also joined the international accounting firm, Deloitte & Touche, and had ascended to partner candidate at the time he left to join his client, Hardee’s Food Systems, Inc. North Carolina Mutual was also one of his clients as well during this time.


A certified public accountant, Speed joined Hardee's Food Systems Inc., a $4 billion systemwide food retailer, as vice president and controller in 1991. In 1997, when Hardee's was purchased by CKE Restaurants, he was named senior vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer, becoming a member of the five-person senior executive management team.


He joined North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company as the senior vice president and chief financial officer in 2002, while the company’s strategic plan was being developed. He helped guide that process and, in April 2003, was named acting president and chief executive officer. By 2004, Speed had assumed the positions of president and chief executive officer.


North Carolina Mutual is headquartered in Durham, N.C. and is the oldest and largest insurance company in America with roots in the African-American community. The company offers a variety of insurance products, including life; accident and health; dental and disability.

Speed serves on the Board of Directors of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, Mechanics & Farmers Bank, Brown Capital Management, Tilson Investment Trust, Investors Title Company, AAA Carolinas, UNC Healthcare Systems and Communities in Schools of North Carolina.


He has served as vice chairman of the President’s Council on Efficiency and Effectiveness for the University of North Carolina and on the Governor’s Business Council for Fiscal Reform, as well as on numerous other boards and commissions.


Speed is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the National Association of Black Accountants.
