Saturday, March 17, 2007

HAMPTON, VA—The South Carolina State softball team snapped a long losing streak Saturday with an 11-0 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore in the Hampton Invite at Hampton, VA. Janae Palmer pitched a five-hit shutout in recording the win for Coach Antonio Smalls’ team.

The SC State women, who had lost 11 in a row, won for the first time since Feb. 17 when they beat Morgan State 6-0 in the second game of a doubleheader in Orangeburg. The Lady Bulldogs are now 2-16 on the season.

Scheduled contests against N.C. Central and Morgan State were postponed due to field conditions. Those games will be played Sunday weather permitting.

On Friday, Smalls’ team lost a doubleheader at Norfolk State, 6-2 and 8-4 at the Norfolk Softball Field Friday. The doubleheader was the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Errors proved to be the downfall for the Lady Bulldogs (1-18, 0-2 MEAC) in both games.

In Game One, the Spartans got on the scoreboard quick with one run in the bottom of the first. A RBI double by Candice Brown in the top of the first tied the game at one. The Spartans (7-12, 2-0 MEAC) took a 3-2 lead by the bottom of the fourth. Norfolk State scored three additional runs in the bottom of the six, two off errors, to top South Carolina State, 6-2 in Game One.

South Carolina State once again went down early as Norfolk State scored two runs in the bottom of the first of Game Two. The Lady Bulldogs would not hang their heads as they put up three runs in the top of the second to go ahead of the Spartans 3-2. Norfolk State scored one run in the bottom of the second and two runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead of South Carolina State, 5-3. Things really began to fall apart for the Lady Bulldogs in the bottom of the fourth as they allowed three runs off one hit and two errors which put Norfolk State up 8-3. The Lady Bulldogs managed to put one run on the board the top of the sixth but that would not be enough falling 8-4 in Game Two.
