Retired U.S. Army Brigadier General, Alumnus to Address New Commissioned Officers

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Retired U.S. Army brigadier general, Richard Dix, a 1987 graduate of SC State University, will serve as the keynote speaker for the Fall 2017 Commissioning Ceremony on Dec. 8. The program begins at 2 p.m. in the Dr. Barbara A. Vaughan Recital Hall.

The students, who will receive their commissions as officers, have made a commitment to serve our nation with integrity, courage and perseverance. The honorees are:


SC State University


Jordan Huff, from Atlanta, Georgia will be earning a degree in communications and journalism. Huff will be commissioned into Army Reserve duty and will serve in the Quartermaster Corps.


Voorhees College


Eric Phillips II from Ladson, South Carolina, will earn a degree in sports management. He will be commissioned into active duty and will serve in the Air Defense Artillery branch.


A devout leader, Dix retired in July of 2017, with more than 30 years of service in the Armed Forces. He has held many leadership positions including, Tank Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, Deputy Chief of Plans and Army Field Support Battalion Commander.


A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Dix has served during the Gulf War, War on Terrorism and has spearheaded several military tasks nationally and overseas.


He earned a Bachelor of Science in marketing from SC State, as well as a Distinguished Military Graduate award. Dix also earned a Master of Arts in procurement and acquisition from Webster University. Additionally, he is a 2009 graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C.
