International Awareness Month to Celebrate Multicultural Events

Monday, November 12, 2018

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – SC State University recognizes November as International Awareness Month. To commemorate this celebration of cultures among students, faculty staff, and the Orangeburg community, the Office of International and National Student Exchange Programs (OINSEP) has planned a series of events and activities during the month of November. These include a Nigerian Cultural Showcase, an International Film Series, and a Passport Fair. This year’s theme is “Embracing our Global Communities.”

The highlight of the month-long series of activities is SC State’s signature Parade of Nations, with a colorful display of flags of the various countries represented by students, faculty, and staff. The parade takes place on November 8th at 12:20 pm, immediately following the University’s Annual Veteran’s Day Appreciation program. The parade will start in front of the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium and will be led by the Marching 101 Drumline. The parade will end at the K.W. Green Student Center Plaza and will culminate with a cultural dance from the UJIMAA dancers and drummers in the Bulldog Lounge. The formal Opening Ceremony for International Awareness Month will immediately follow in the Bulldog Lounge of the Student Center. At the ceremony, the International Awareness Appreciation Award, the International Student of the Year Award, and the Study Abroad Ambassador Award will be presented.

The Office of International and National Student Exchange Programs has selected Dr. Dior Konate, Associate Professor of African History, as the keynote speaker for the opening ceremony. Konate holds a Ph.D. in African History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has global travel experience in Austria, Canada, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Portugal, and Senegal. She has just published a book entitled Prison Architecture and Punishment in Colonial Senegal funded by an NEH grant. She looks forward to sharing her insights on embracing global cultures with the campus community.
