ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Dominik Mjartan, president and chief executive officer of Optus Bank will be the featured speaker for the Executive Speaker Series on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at noon in the Belcher Hall fourth-floor Auditorium. Mjartan will speak to students on the importance and value of community banking.

Pough12Optus Bank, formerly S. C. Community Bank, is a U.S. Treasury certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) and a federally designated Minority Depository Institution with headquarters located in Columbia, South Carolina. The financial institution’s name change occurred earlier this year to, “highlight a new brand, products and services that will enhance the historical focus and mission of creating wealth-building opportunities for everyone, regardless of their inherited background, privilege or zip code,” Mjartan said.

He believes that community banks have a mission to serve a broad section of the community.

“Everybody in America should have access to decent economic opportunity and the banking system should be working to afford that to every person in America,” Mjartan said.

He claims that Optus Bank and other community banks excel at making these opportunities available.

Mjartan served more than a decade as a senior executive officer at Southern Bancorp, a community development bank. Most recently, he served as the executive vice president of Southern Bancorp Inc., which is a holding company for the Southern Bancorp bank. He also served as chief executive officer of affiliated lending company, Southern Bancorp Community Partners.

In addition, he is the chair of the CDFI Coalition and director of the Community Development Bankers Association. Locally, Mjartan is finance chair of the Midlands Arts Conservatory and serves on the finance committee of the Women’s Rights and Empowerment Network.

Mjartan earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Ulster in the United Kingdom. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in management from the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, where he graduated as Summa Cum Laude and a Donaghey Scholar.
