VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will hold the 2007 MEAC Tennis Championship tournament April 20-22, at Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C.
The defending MEAC Champions of South Carolina State (14-7) Bulldogs were undefeated in conference play (9-0) for the second time in three years. They have won three consecutive titles and six overall and will compete for the chance to win their fourth straight crown.
On the women’s side, No. 75 South Carolina State (18-5) will vie for their third straight MEAC title and fourth overall when they open up tournament play on Friday. The Lady Bulldogs posted an unblemished record in conference play (10-0) for the third consecutive year.
Only the top eight teams, out of the 10 participating institutions for the men and the 11 participating institutions for the women, will participate in the tennis championship tournaments.
Coppin State and Maryland Eastern Shore were eliminated on the men’s side, while North Carolina A&T, Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore were eliminated for the women from tournament play by virtue of their conference records.
The MEAC Tennis championship tournament begins Friday, April 20 at 8:30 a.m. No. 1 seed South Carolina State will face No. 8 seed Delaware State and No. 2 Hampton will face No. 7 Morgan State. On the women’s side, top seeded South Carolina State will face No. 8 Morgan State. and No. 2 Bethune-Cookman will match up against No. 7 Coppin State.
The semifinals matches will begin on Saturday and are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and Noon. The women’s championship final tips-off at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 21 followed by the men championship final at 11:30 a.m. Admission to the 2007 MEAC Tennis Championship tournament is free to the public
