RALEIGH, N.C. – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) completed day one of the 2007 MEAC Tennis Championship today (Friday) at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, with the top four seeds advancing.
The top-seeded South Carolina State men advanced to Saturday’s semifinal match after topping No. 8 Delaware State 4-0. The Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State, who earned the top seed for the women, defeated No. 8 Morgan State 4-0. The Bulldogs will face No. 4 Florida A&M at 8:30 a.m. in a rematch of last year’s championship final, while South Carolina State’s women will also match up against the number four seed No. 4 Florida A&M Lady Rattlers at 8:30 a.m.
In other men’s action, No. 2 Hampton shutout No. 7 Morgan State 4-0. The Pirates earned wins at the number 4, 5, and 6 positions and completed the sweep with the doubles point at the one and three spots. They will go on to play No. 3 Norfolk State tomorrow at Noon. The Spartans advanced to the semifinal match-up after defeating No. 6 Howard 4-0.
On the women’s side, the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman, who earned the number two seed, defeated No. 7 Coppin State 4-0. They will face No. 3 Hampton, who topped Norfolk State 4-0 in a semifinal matchup at 8:30 a.m.
The MEAC women’s championship final tips-off at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 21 followed by the men championship final at 11:30 a.m. Admission to the 2007 MEAC Tennis Championship tournament is free to the public.
