ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State made significant progress in academic performance as measured by the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Academic Progress Report (APR).

Two SC State sports programs earned Public Recognition Awards for being ranked among the top ten (10) percent among NCAA institutions in academic performance and only one program fell below the minimum score of 925 set by the governing body.

Both the women’s golf program and women’s outdoor track were recognized for perfect scores during the assessment period. Men’s basketball, with a score of 909 plus 11 points for squad-size adjustment, was the only sport to fall below the 925 minimum, however, the team showed a significant improvement over last year’s score of 813 plus 12 points for the squad-size adjustment.

Although men’s basketball fell below the 925 minimum, the NCAA determined that the university would not be subjected to any contemporaneous penalties because the recent performance of the program was at a level consistent with or surpassing that of the overall student body.

“We are pleased,” Johnson said “that the academic improvement plan we implemented to strengthen our overall program is paying dividends and we will continue to enhance our efforts as it relates to men’s basketball and all of our programs.

“We received perfect scores in both women’s golf and women’s outdoor track and are extremely proud of this achievement.”
