ORANGEBURG, SC – The South Carolina State women’s tennis team was honored Wednesday with an “NCAA Sendoff” at the Student Center Plaza on the campus.
The Lady Bulldogs, who captured their third straight MEAC crown and will compete in the prestigious NCAA Tennis Championship Saturday and Sunday (May 12-13) at the University of Georgia in Athens, was feted by a crowd that included President Andrew Hugine, other administrators, faculty and staff, students, community representatives and the Mayor Paul Miller of Orangeburg.
The SC State women are playing in the postseason for a third consecutive season. In two previous trips to the NCAA Championship, they lost to then-number two Florida (2005) and number nine North Carolina (2006)
SC State, 21-5 and ranked 75th nationally in the FILA Intercollegiate Tennis poll, will meet a number 2-ranked team for the second time in three seasons as they take on host Georgia (#2) at 10 a.m. Saturday. Auburn (#31) and N.C. State (#39) will meet in the second game at 1 p.m. The winners will meet Sunday at 1 p.m. for the Regional title and a chance to advance.
