ORANGEBURG – The next installment of SC State’s weekly Executive Speaker Series will feature Mahaliah Levine Sinclair, ‘72, a recently retired senior executive with Discover Financial Services.
The lecture – “Preparing for Today’s Marketplace: 10 Tipping Points” – will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 12 p.m. in the Belcher Hall fourth floor auditorium. For additional information, contact Dr. Ann S. Winstead at (803) 516-4864 or Debbie Morant at (803) 536-7138.
The Executive Speaker Series, sponsored by the College of Business and Applied Professional Sciences, is a component of the Leadership and Professional Development Program, which all business majors are required to complete. The series exposes students to various aspects of the workplace, including viewpoints of leaders who are on the cutting edge of business, industry and government.
Past participants have come from a wide array of companies and industries, including Pfizer Inc., Springs Industries, Bowater Inc., Ernst & Young, AT&T, Ameriprise Financial, Black Enterprise, Blue Cross Blue Shield, SCANA, Sonoco, Bank of America, Johnson Controls, Milliken & Company and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
Mahaliah Levine Sinclair recently retired from Discover Financial Services after over 29 years of service. Discover is one of the leading credit card companies in the United States. During her tenure at Discover, she held management positions in sales, training and development and human resources. Her most recent position before retirement was vice president of human resources for Discover Network, the company’s sales division.
As a human resources executive, Levine Sinclair offered clients assistance in all aspects of performance management such as recruitment, compensation, employee relations and executive coaching. She was also considered the human resources expert in talent management and leadership assessment. Her expertise was used to coordinate all succession planning efforts for “high potential” candidates at the senior level. As a result of Levine Sinclair’s leadership, the company’s leadership pipeline was strengthened and its retention of high performing officers and directors was improved.
While spearheading the corporate training function, Levine Sinclair introduced the first e-learning training courses to the organization. This new delivery method multiplied business course offerings ten-fold in the first year of implementation, creating more effective “just-in-time” training and higher team performance. Levine Sinclair also designed the first formalized management development program for the 1500-plus supervisory population. She delivered this specialized three-day training to the President of Discover and his executive team.
Levine Sinclair has been recognized by the financial services industry as an excellent role model for women and minorities. Her infectious enthusiasm for helping others to achieve their goals is why she also gives back to the community by designing and facilitating workshops in Resume Writing, Interviewing, Goal Setting and Managing Your Performance. She has also spent time serving on various youth advocate and job training boards. Levine Sinclair currently serves as executive secretary for the SC State University Board of Visitors.
A 1972 SC State alumna, Levine Sinclair also earned an MBA from the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management in Lake Forest, Ill. She currently resides in Glendale, Ariz., where she is the owner of Consign ‘N Design, a new, upscale consignment store.
The Executive Speaker Series was implemented in the core curriculum of the School of Business in 1996 as a component of the Leadership and Professional development Program, which all business majors are required to complete. The series exposes students to various aspects of the workplace, including viewpoints of leaders who are on the cutting edge of business, industry and government.
