Student Government Association officers will also be sworn into office
SC State will crown a new Miss South Carolina State University on Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, at 7 p.m. in the Smith-Hammond- Middleton Memorial Center. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.
Portia Nekia Gifford, Miss South Carolina State University 2007-2008, is the 21-year-old daughter of SFC (Ret.) and Mrs. John (Angela) Gifford of Augusta, Ga. She aspires to become a pharmacist and to pursue a doctoral degree in the field of nuclear pharmacy after completing her undergraduate studies in Chemistry at SC State in May 2008.
She has received the coveted 2007 Shining Star Award from the South Carolina State University Foundation, in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement, campus leadership and community service.
A classically trained dancer, professional model and advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness, Gifford is a member of the University’s Honors College and the S.C. Alliance for Minority Participation (in science fields) Program (SCAMP), which recognized her as the 2005 “Most Outstanding Summer Research Intern.” Gifford is a member of the Alpha Nu Sigma Nuclear Honor Society and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
During her year of service as Miss South Carolina State University, Gifford will encourage students to become more actively involved as campus and community volunteers with the platform, “Stop the Violence of Silence.”
An installation ceremony for the new slate of Student Government Association executive officers will also be held Friday evening. The SGA officers include President Jeremy Rogers, Vice President Arfraja McLeod, Business Manager Johnerra Alford, Corresponding Secretary Sheila Wright and Recording Secretary Whitney McCrea.
