FROM: Maurice G. Washington, Chair MGW
SCSU Presidential Search Committee
SUBJECT: Presidential Finalists Campus Visit
As you know from previous reports of the Presidential Search Committee, the final phase of our recruitment effort includes an invitation to the finalist candidates to visit the campus. As reported in the earlier press release we are pleased to announce that we have invited the finalists listed below to visit the campus and to meet with University constituency on the dates noted.
Monday, April 28th – DR. JULIETTE B. BELL, currently the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Fayetteville State University
Tuesday, April 29th – DR. GEORGE E. COOPER, currently the Deputy Administrator for Science and Education Resources Development at the U.S. Department of Agriculture
Wednesday, April 30th – DR. JOHNSON O. AKINLEYE, currently the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Programs at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington
Thursday, May 1st – DR. JUANITA P. FAIN, currently the Vice President for Planning at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Friday, May 2nd – DR. LAWRENCE F. DAVENPORT, currently the Interim President of Paragon Foundation in West Palm Beach, Florida
The purposes of these visits are two-fold. First, they will enable us to know the candidates better. Second, and perhaps more important, the visits will allow us to further acquaint the candidates with South Carolina State University and its constituents.
Throughout the search process, the committee has been pledged to protect the identity of candidates. Obviously, their identities are no longer confidential, but I urge you to bear in mind that each of them holds a significant position elsewhere, and any inquiries you feel obliged to make about them should be handled with sensitivity and discretion.
In addition to the search committee's preliminary interviews with these candidates, we have had many conversations with individuals who have worked with them and know them well. There is a strong consensus within the search committee that these candidates are capable of providing effective leadership for South Carolina State University.
We have arranged scheduled meetings with the various university con¬stituen¬cies, as well as an open forum at which all members of the university community can meet each candidate. These meetings will occur at the times noted on the attached schedule. We encourage all interested members of the campus community to attend.
Response forms will be available at each meeting so that we may get your feedback on each candidate. We ask that you complete the form and return it at the end of the meeting you attend.
We are pleased with the progress of the search and look forward to this final phase. Thank you for your continuing support and assistance.
